WKS104: Mechatronics 4

This is the FOURTH session of a 4-part workshop. You will need to take all 4 sessions to complete this workshop.

Now is your chance to know more about CNC machines and how they operate! Join TechShop and John Osborne as he leads you on your first CNC build from scratch. Over the course of the 4 sessions, you will build your own Doddlebot.

This course is designed for students to learn the basics of design, engineering, electronics, programming, and troubleshooting while enjoying the hands-on aspect of building your own CNCmachine.

Prerequisite: Mechatronics 1, 2, & 3

Each workshop must be taken in order.

WKS802: Laser Cut Lanterns

Go further with the skills you learned in your Epilog Laser SBU or Universal Laser SBU to create a decorative and functional work of art! Your instructor will provide you with a selection of pattern ideas, and consult with you on your own designs. Completed lanterns will be made of wood and acrylic, with an electric cord and bulb. You will also be shown how to modify your base for candles.
This is a 4 hour workshop. Upon completion, you may paint or stain your creation, or modify what you have learned to create other styles and shapes. This project will illuminate your home with your own creativity, or provide a gift that is both personal and practical.

LAS101 is required before you take this workshop. Only the Epilog Laser will be used in this workshop. However, everything taught will be applicable to the Universal Laser System.

Project: A custom-cut lantern with electric lighting.
Prerequisites: LAS101: Epilog SBU
Equipment Access: Laser Lab, HUB
Minimum Age: 12
Supervision Requirements: During class, all 12 to 16 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.
Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

WKS805: Custom Signs 1: Sign Making on the ShopBot

Apply skills you learned in the ShopBot SBU to create a custom-designed sign. Welcome guests to your cabin, design a unique house number display, or inscribe a favorite saying to adorn your wall.

Once you learn how to apply these skills to your own projects, the sky's the limit!

You will be using VCarve and CorelDRAW on the ShopBot to create your design. Your experienced instructor will help you determine design aesthetic, font alignment, and procedural steps to make your ideas work.

After this workshop, you will have a custom sign to take home, which you may paint, stain, or leave to weather naturally. Though the sign will be made from hardwood in class, you will be given the option of adding suggested embellishments in other mediums from the laser cutters, waterjet, or preferred machine on your own.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of CNC302

Project: Wooden sign

Safety:
    Mandatory: Closed-toe shoes, eye protection, short sleeves, face shield
    Advisable: Hearing protection and particle filter or dust mask when in the woodshop

WKS808: Wooden Garden Bench

Increase your woodworking skills and build a beautiful project for your home!

In this 2-part workshop, your instructor will walk you through the process of building a functional garden bench and also show you woodworking techniques you can apply to future projects and help you streamline your own woodworking procedures. This workshop is designed to help you budget your time for large projects as well as increase your confidence using the tools in the woodshop.

Your instructor will give you ideas on customizing the bench with other areas of the shop, such as embellishments from the waterjet or laser cutters.

After this workshop, you will have a full-size bench that you may paint, stain, or leave to weather naturally.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of WOD101: Woodshop SBU is required before taking this class

Project: Wooden Garden Bench

Safety:
  • Mandatory: Closed-toe shoes, eye protection, short sleeves, and a face shield
  • Advisable: Hearing protection and a particle filter or dust mask when in the woodshop
Class Length: 2 separate 4-hour sessions for a total of 8 hours. The second session will be held on Saturday, August 26th, at 12PM.

Unlimited Class Passes are not valid for use with multi-session workshops.

WKS809: Laser Cut Basic Dice Tower

Level up your tabletop gaming with a unique, functional, laser-cut work of art!

Using the skills you learned in the Epilog Laser SBU or Universal Laser SBU, you will be able to cut your own dice tower.

Whether you’re complementing a fully-storied DnD campaign or adding creativity to Monopoly night, this project is simple, yet creative enough to create different designs for any gaming style. The instructor will provide you with some pattern ideas and consult with you on your own designs.

This is a 4-hour workshop. Upon completion, you may paint or stain your creation, or modify what you have learned to create other styles and shapes. This project will lend a customized aspect for your next game night or family gathering, and will look fantastic to display between game nights.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of LAS101: Epilog SBU or LAS103

Only the Epilog laser will be used in this workshop. However, everything taught will be applicable to the Universal Laser System.

Project: A custom-cut wooden dice tower

Equipment Access: Laser Lab, HUB

Minimum Age: 8

WKS822: Custom Glassware - Laser and Sandblast

In this workshop, you will learn how to etch designs into glassware using a laser-cut template and the sandblaster!

Your experienced instructor will show you different methods for creating your template and the best way to tackle your designs. You will wrap a glass beer mug with a masking film and use the Epilog laser and rotary attachment to cut out a design of your own creation, then use the sandblaster to create a deeper etching. You may also choose to spray paint the etched areas before removing the masking film.

Please have a simple black-and-white design in a digital file to use for this workshop. TechShop will provide one mug for each student, masking film, and a few colors of spray paint.

This class is a perfect complementary course to your Laser Rotary SBU or Media Blasting and Powder Coating SBU. Brush up on your skills or introduce new tools into your maker repertoire!

Bring a flash drive or portable drive with your image file. All other materials will be provided

WKS823: Heat Transfer Techniques for Fabric

In this workshop, students will use the Universal laser to cut out a design from special heat-transfer material. This technique allows you to make custom t-shirts, tote bags or other cloth-based projects!

You can combine colors to add interest, or make a statement in monotone.
Once the fabric pieces are cut out, you will use the heat press to permanently adhere them to material. Students may also bring in their own t-shirt, tote bag, or other fabric item to use.
Please have a simple vector format design in a digital file to use for this workshop. Black and white photos are acceptable. TechShop will provide one black t-shirt for each student and the transfer material in black, red, blue, silver, and white.
Project: Custom t-shirt
Prerequisites: None!
Equipment access: Laser Lab, Heat Press, Computer Lab
Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required

WKS829: Metal Marquee Letter

This workshop will allow you to create a vintage-style light up marquee sign! Your letter or number of choice will be cut from galvanized sheet metal on the Waterjet cutter, and other tools in the metal shop. Your experienced instructor will assist you if you have not taken the Waterjet SBU. You will also learn how to wire your sign with old-school lights, which can be made to connect to additional signs!
Your finished sign can be wall-mounted or free-standing. This is the perfect class to introduce yourself to the Waterjet, or refresh your skills!

This is a 2-part workshop, four hours each day. First session on Saturday 8/19/17 at 10:00 AM, second session is one week later on Saturday 8/26/17 at 10:00 AM
Unlimited Class Passes are not valid on 2-part workshops.

Safety Requirements: Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Safety glasses and earplugs will provided, their use determined by the instructor.

WKS835: Custom Cornhole Boards

Go further with the skills you learned in your Woodshop SBU and build a fun lawn game for yourself or parties!

In this 2-part workshop, your instructor will walk you through the process of building a functional garden bench and a set of sand bags for two teams. This workshop is designed to help you budget your time for large projects as well as increase your confidence using the tools in the woodshop.

After this workshop, you will have two full-size Cornhole boards that you may paint, stain, varnish or decal as you please along with a few sand bags for gameplay.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of WOD101: Woodshop SBU is required before taking this class

Project: Custom Made Cornhole Boards and Sand Bags

Safety:
  • Mandatory: Closed-toe shoes, eye protection, short sleeves, and a face shield
  • Advisable: Hearing protection and a particle filter or dust mask when in the woodshop
Class Length: 2 separate 3-hour sessions for a total of 6 hours. The second session will be held on Sunday, August 13th, at 10AM.

Unlimited Class Passes are not valid for use with multi-session workshops.

WKS857: Pinstriping

Sexify your DIY! John Jaranson – Ford materials engineer, TechShop instructor, and automotive artist – offers hands-on lessons for this sought-after technique. Add calligraphic lines to your 'rod, your guitar, your laptop, your lunchbox, your smartphone...

John will show you the tools and materials to produce your own vanity license plate. Bring in your own small projects to get some pointers on how to take them to the next level!

Tools and materials are for workshop project only.

Please note: This is not a Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class. Workshops utilize TechShop’s equipment, and all shop rules still apply – unless you have passed the required safety course(s), your instructor will assist you on machinery. Membership is required for working in the shop space outside of classes and workshops.
