WKS802: Laser Cut Lanterns

Go further with the skills you learned in your Epilog Laser SBU or Universal Laser SBU to create a decorative and functional work of art! Your instructor will provide you with a selection of pattern ideas, and consult with you on your own designs. Completed lanterns will be made of wood and acrylic, with an electric cord and bulb. You will also be shown how to modify your base for candles.
This is a 4 hour workshop. Upon completion, you may paint or stain your creation, or modify what you have learned to create other styles and shapes. This project will illuminate your home with your own creativity, or provide a gift that is both personal and practical.

LAS101 is required before you take this workshop. Only the Epilog Laser will be used in this workshop. However, everything taught will be applicable to the Universal Laser System.

Project: A custom-cut lantern with electric lighting.
Prerequisites: LAS101: Epilog SBU
Equipment Access: Laser Lab, HUB
Minimum Age: 12
Supervision Requirements: During class, all 12 to 16 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.
Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

WKS805: Custom Signs 1: Sign Making on the ShopBot

Apply skills you learned in your Shopbot SBU to create a custom-designed sign. Welcome guests to your cabin, design a unique house number display, or inscribe a favorite saying to adorn your wall. Once you learn how to apply these skills to your own projects, the sky's the limit!

You will be using V Carve and CorelDraw on the Shopbot to create your design. Your experienced instructor will help you determine design aesthetic, font alignment, and procedural steps to make your ideas work.

After this workshop, you will have a custom sign to take home, which you may paint, stain, or leave to weather naturally. Though the sign will be made from hardwood in class, you will be given the option of adding suggested embellishments in other mediums from the laser cutters, Waterjet, or other preferred machine on your own.
CNC302 is required before you take this workshop

WKS806: Custom Signs 2: ShopBot and Waterjet

Apply the skills you learned in your Shopbot SBU and Waterjet SBU to create a custom-designed sign. Combine your CNC wood and metal skills to create a beautiful piece for your own home, or as the perfect gift!
You will be learning how to use V Carve and Corel Draw on the Shopbot to create your design, and the wooden base. Then your experienced instructor will show you how to adapt your files for the metal inlay you will cut out on the waterjet.
After this workshop, you will have a custom sign to take home, which you may paint, stain, or leave to weather naturally.
This is a 2-part workshop! The first session will focus on design and the ShopBot, and the second on the Waterjet and assembly.

This is a 2 day workshop. The project starts on the 14th of December, with the second session on December 21st. Both sessions begin at 6:00

CNC302: ShopBot SBU and CNC401: Waterjet SBU are required before you take this workshop

WKS809: Laser Cut Basic Dice Tower

Level up your tabletop gaming with a unique, functional, laser-cut work of art!
Using the skills you learned in your Epilog Laser SBU or Universal Laser SBU, you will be able to cut your own dice tower, at any skill level of lasering. Your instructor will provide you with some pattern ideas, and consult with you on your own designs.
Whether you’re complimenting a fully storied DnD campaign, or adding creativity to Monopoly night, this project is simple, yet creative enough to create different designs for any gaming style.

This is a 4 hour workshop. Upon completion, you may paint or stain your creation, or modify what you have learned to create other styles and shapes. This project will lend a customized aspect for your next game night or family gathering, and will look fantastic to display between game nights.

LAS101 or LAS103 is required before you take this workshop. Only the Epilog Laser will be used in this workshop. However, everything taught will be applicable to the Universal Laser System.

WKS814: Wine Rack: Classic Square-X Style

Though this classic design is traditionally used for wine, it functions well as a finished storage element for any type of decor.
During this workshop, you will learn how to cut and assemble the pieces, using woodshop tools. Your instructor will also give you tips on securing multiple units together, or customizing your design further using other tools of the shop.
This is a 4 hour workshop. Upon completion, you will have one square rack, which you may paint, stain, or leave in natural wood.

WKS815: Pen Turning

Spend some time making a gift you can give to a loved one this Christmas. Nothing says Happy Holidays like a handmade gift from one of our workshops.
Students will be provided with all the materials needed; all you will need to bring is your individual creativity.



Signing up for this workshop will send you home with a wood turned custom pen while learning basic design principles and the wood lathe

WKS820: Pinhole Camera

Create dreamy photos with a camera that you made! This pinhole camera is an original design that you will cut on the laser cutter, hand assemble and customize. Students will learn about the basics of pinhole photography and put their laser cutting/engraving skills to use!

WKS822: Custom Glassware: Laser and Sandblast

In this workshop, you will learn how to etch designs into glassware using a laser-cut template and the sandblaster!

Your experienced instructor will show you different methods for creating your template, and the best way to tackle your designs.

Students will wrap a glass beer mug with a masking film, and use the Epilog Laser and Rotary Attachment to cut out a design of their own creation. The sandblaster will then be used to create a deeper etching, and students may also choose to spray paint the etched areas before removing the masking film.

Please have a simple black-and-white design in a digital file to use for this workshop. TechShop will provide one mug for each student, plus the masking film and a few colors of spray paint.

This class is a perfect complementary course to your Laser Rotary SBU, or Media Blasting and Powder Coating SBU. Brush up on your skills, or introduce new tools into your maker repertoire!

Bring a flash drive or portable drive with your image file. All other materials will be provided

WKS823: Heat Transfer Techniques for Fabric

In this workshop, students will use the Universal laser to cut out a design from special heat-transfer material. This technique allows you to make custom t-shirts, tote bags or other cloth-based projects!

You can combine colors to add interest, or make a statement in monotone.
Once the fabric pieces are cut out, you will use the heat press to permanently adhere them to material. Students may also bring in their own t-shirt, tote bag, or other fabric item to use.
Please have a simple vector format design in a digital file to use for this workshop. Black and white photos are acceptable. TechShop will provide one black t-shirt for each student and the transfer material in black, red, blue, silver, and white.

WKS825: Bottle Carrier

In this workshop, you will combine your woodworking and lasering skills under direction of your experienced instructor, to create a customized gift or tote of your own!
This bottle carrier has an attached bottle opener, so you’ll be ready for the party! Leave the carrier as a gift to your hosts, or keep it stocked so you’re always ready for the next event.

This carrier can be easily adapted to tote hand tools, brushes, crafting supplies, makeup, pencils, dining/grilling utensils, condiments, and many other convenient alternatives.
Once you learn how to make one, you’ll never be at a loss for gift-giving!

Students will cut out parts from solid wood, and add laser customization with a quote or simple image of their choice.

Woodshop SBU and Laser SBU are required before you take this workshop
Students MUST BRING a portable drive with their quote/image file in Corel or Illustrator.
