CNC302: CNC ShopBot SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the computer-controlled (CNC) ShopBot router to cut objects, parts or art designed in 2D or 3D CAD. This powerful tool is perfect for rapid prototyping and digital fabrication. Create parts with complex curves and surfaces from most woods, plastics, foams, and other composites (no metal on this machine). This class teaches the use of the machine, but does not cover CAD drawing or toolpathing. VCarve Pro (CNC 201) is a good starting point for people new to CAD and CAM.

Materials fee: Includes materials for the class project and a router bit for each student to keep.

Project: Wooden gear

Prerequisites

  • Recommended: Use of CAD and CAM software like VCarve Pro - CNC 201, Basic Woodshop SBU - WOD101

Equipment access: CNC ShopBot Router

Minimum age: 16

Supervision requirements: During class, 16- and 17-year-old -year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the CNC ShopBot outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety

  • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, short sleeves

  • Advisable: Hearing protection, particle filter or dust mask

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC403: Tormach II - 4th Axis and Tool Changes

In this class, students who have taken the basic Tormach class will learn to use advanced features of the machine and Mach3 software as well as the 4th-axis attachment. You will learn how to set up a tool index of multiple tools, increasing your efficiency of machining parts using multiple tools and parts. You will also learn how to set up and manually work the 4th-axis rotary table, opening up the world of 4th-axis machining and workholding solutions.

The 4th-axis attachment allows you to machine on a rotating cylinder, held in the horizontal or vertical position.

Setting up the tool index allows you to change tools quickly, without having to zero your Z.

Prerequisite: You must have taken and passed the basic Tormach class before enrolling in this class.

1 session currently scheduled:
Tormach II - 4th Axis and Tool Changes Monday, 8/25/14 6:30 PM 3.0 Hours 6 SEATS TOTAL
3 SEATS LEFT
    * Member Sign Up $90.00, No Materials Fee
Non-member Sign Up $115.00, No Materials Fee
    * Membership is verified at the time of the class session. Be sure to bring your badge.

CNC310: CAD/CAM Software - InventorCAM

InventorCAM is the next level CAM program offered by TechShop, supporting multiple-axis machining, both 2.5D and 3D feature cut path generation, and high levels of control over the cutting paths generated. It has the powerful benefit of being directly embedded into Autodesk Inventor so users can easily switch back to creating or adjusting their part and the toolpaths automatically reflecting the changes.

InventorCAM's highly intuitive user interface allows toolpath generation to be as simple or as complex as users want it to be, with equal level of control over the geometry and makeup of cutting tools. It is the optimum tool for the intermediate to advanced TechShop CNC machinist.

In this class, students will follow the instructor step by step in creating toolpaths for half of a feature-rich part, then solidify their knowledge by creating the toolpaths for the other half with instructor guidance.

Prerequisites: This CAM works with Inventor to create GCode; you must be able to use Autodesk Inventor before signing up for this class.

In order to get the most out of this class, we recommend that students be familiar with TechShop's first-level CAM programs from Vectric: VCarve and Cut3D as well as have experience using the Tormach or the ShopBot. Introductory topics such as feeds and speeds, zeroing machines appropriately according to defined zeros in the CAM program, workholding, and loading exported toolpaths into the machines will not be reviewed.

CNC401: CNC Waterjet Cutter SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to safely operate the waterjet cutter, one of the most powerful tools at TechShop.

Precisely cut almost any flat material with a very thin, high pressure stream of water and abrasive garnet. Work with everything from the thinnest sheet metal to 8 inches of granite, as well as wood, glass, tile, marble, and more. This extremely versatile, easy-to-program, and low-waste machine works without the risk of heat damage. The large bed accommodates full sheets of material.

Class time is split between learning the FlowPath software and using the waterjet.

Note: When using the FlowJet, a consumables fee will be charged, only for cutting time, not setup time. The waterjet cuts quickly and cost estimate strategies will be covered.

Project: Gear-shaped bottle opener

Prerequisites

  • Required: Understanding of vector-based graphics

  • Recommended: CAD to CAM experience

Equipment access: Waterjet cutter

Minimum age: 16

Supervision requirements: During class, all 16- and 17-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the waterjet outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.
