WKS1217SJ: UL Product Safety Testing Workshop

Product safety is critically important if you plan to sell or use your product outside of the development environment, to reduce the risk of electric shock, fire and other hazards as well as consider other compliance requirements such as FCC/EMC, Energy Efficiency, Transaction Security, ADA, etc.

Effective product safety implementation is an essential step to sell your product to a major retailer, reduce your legal/financial liability and to better raise investment capital. It is recommended to concurrently assess product safety compliance at the appropriate design stages to avoid major redesign/rework later to meet product safety requirements. After taking this workshop will have the basic understanding of test standards, how to conduct product safety tests and apply these skills to many different types of product compliance requirements.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn:

  • How to “safely” use basic safety test equipment to test your product (this workshop will focus predominately on 120-240 VAC electrical safety tests; temperature and mechanical tests will also be included)

  • Understanding specific construction requirements and tests from actual UL (Underwriters Laboratories) product safety standards (tests such as: Power Input, Leakage Current, Temperature, Abnormal Conditions, Impact)

  • Criteria for compliance/non-compliance of product construction and testing; preventive actions to ensure compliance and corrective solutions for non-compliance

    WKS441: Make a Skateboard Deck

We are excited to present our latest workshop at TechShop San Francisco: Build Your Own Skateboard Deck!

In this two-day workshop, participants will design and shape their very own skateboard decks.

During the first day, students will cut their veneer into 12" strips, then glue and clamp them over a form, determining how much concave the board has and what angle the tail of the board is. On the second day, we will pull our skateboard blanks off the forms, transfer our profile designs, then cut the shape out and round the corners of the board.

Participants will walk away with a custom skateboard deck, ready to paint or laser designs onto or just bolt on hardware and ride that same day.

    WKS519: Pewter Drop Casting Workshop

Since the 11th century, pewter has been cast into objects of utility and beauty. An alloy of tin and copper, pewter is relatively malleable, and its soft sheen provides an elegant contrast to the steel which surrounds us today.

In this hands-on workshop, you will learn to make a mold and cast a small part using molten pewter. You will first create a plaster mold blank that can be carved using hand tools or any other carving instrument. Next, you will hand carve a simple part or design and will learn various other techniques such as using modeling clay or copying an existing piece. Finally, you will melt the pewter and make your casting to create a pendant, key fob, piece of jewelry, or small part.

    Workshop length: 2 hours

    Cost: $50 including materials fee
