AUD006: Autodesk Inventor - Basics

Learn how to navigate, sketch and model in Autodesk Inventor.

In this class, you will gain a basic understanding of parametric design; file types; dimensioning; geometric constraints; patterns; adding text; inserting image files; basic modeling including Extrude, Revolve, Loft and Sweep; assemblies; exporting your file and creating laser-able and CAMable files. The goal is to provide you with enough tools to use Inventor at a solid, basic level and to inspire you to seek out more advanced features such as simulation, mold making and sheet metal.

We will use the book, “Mastering Autodesk Inventor 2013,” to explain and teach concepts. For this reason, we strongly recommend that you purchase the book and bring it to class. For your convenience, it is available in the TechShop retail store.

TechShop members who take this class will receive $35 in store credit after the completion of the class.

AUD002: Autodesk Inventor SkillsBuilder - Introduction to Sketching

This Skills Builder class will provide you with an accelerated and intense introduction to Sketching in Autodesk Inventor.

Autodesk Inventor is a comprehensive and flexible software suite created exclusively for 3D design, product simulation, tooling creation and design communication. Inventor takes you beyond the average 3D software environment into Digital Prototyping by enabling you to design, visualize and simulate your products with an intuitive and user friendly interface.
  • Design—Integrate all design data into a single digital model
  • Visualize—Create a virtual representation of your final product to market it before it’s built
  • Simulate—Digitally simulate your product's real-world performance

We recommend taking this class along with the Autodesk Inventor SkillsBuilder - Introduction to Assemblies class to get a fuller understanding of this powerful 3D design tool!

Autodesk Inventor is available at TechShop on all computer workstations in our Members HUB and Computer Lab.

Prerequisite: You MUST take the Autodesk Inventor Basics class before taking this class.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

AUD005 : Autodesk Inventor for Sheet Metal

In this project class, you will learn how to create and assemble sheet metal parts in Autodesk Inventor.

You will be guided through the process of building sheet metal housing features, creating patterns and using iFeatures. You will learn how to use equations to drive dimensions, how to generate two-dimensional drawings of your sheet metal parts, and how to export your geometry to a CAM program, enabling you to generate a file that can be used on a CNC machine.

Prerequisite: You MUST take the Autodesk Inventor Basics class before taking this class.

AUD008: Autodesk AutoCAD - Basics

Autodesk AutoCAD has a long history as one being of the very first CAD (computer aided drafting) programs available for personal computers. Today, AutoCAD software builds on this legacy and is still one of the world's leading 2D and 3D CAD design tools.

In this course, you will learn how to draw precise, vector-based CAD drawings that can be interpreted and used by CAM (computer aided machining) programs. The vector drawing skills taught in this class are the basis for creating designs to be used with TechShop's Epilog laser cutters, CNC vinyl cutter, Tormach CNC mill, ShopBot router, Flow waterjet cutter, and CNC plasma cutter. The 2D drawing skills taught in this course also translate to designing, drawing and manipulating 3D parts in other Autodesk software such as Autodesk Inventor and Revit.

Learn:
  • How to set up your workspace for efficiency
  • How to draw with arcs, polylines, splines and more
  • How to use text and reference images in your designs
  • How layers work
  • The theory behind drawing clean vectors
  • Optimization tips and tricks

AUD009: Autodesk Inventor for Mold Design

Injection mold design and manufacturing can be one of the most expensive and time consuming processes in manufacturing and prototyping. But it doesn't have to be.

Autodesk Inventor has a number of incredible software tools that make designing complex parts much easier. The feature-rich mold design section covered in this class is one of them.

In this class, the instructor will cover several tools that are available to automate key aspects of injection mold design and testing.

    - Learn how parts modeled in Inventor can be used to automatically generate an efficient mold.

    - Learn how Inventor ensure that any changes to the digital model are automatically reflected in your mold design.

When you are done with your design, the file can be exported to a variety of different CAM (computer aided manufacturing) packages to generate the code needed to machine your mold on equipment such as TechShop's CNC Tormach mill. Once you've machined your mold it can be used to manufacture parts on TechShop's Morgan Press injection molding machine.

This class is a fantastic way to do in-house rapid prototyping and can help you cut down on the number of iterations needed before you have a working final mold ready for production on any scale.

Prerequisite: You MUST take the Autodesk Inventor Basics class before taking this class.
