FAB105: Vacuum Forming SBU

Lots of parts can be made quickly and inexpensively with the use of a vacuum forming system.

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn the parts of the vacuum forming machine and then make vacuum-formed parts. You will make a master (plug) tool from inexpensive materials like pine, foam, balsa or found objects; select plastic sheeting; and then use the created part as a "plug" to mold the final object from a heated plastic sheet with the assistance of atmospheric pressure.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

1 session currently scheduled:

FAB106: Sand Blasting and Powder Coating SBU

Powder coating is a durable, simple to apply, easy to clean up, product. It is inexpensive, and more environmentally friendly than paint, as it has no VOCs and no solvents are used. The final product is more durable than paint, and powder is available in many colors and finish types.

The sand blaster can be used on metal, wood, glass, mirror, plastics and almost any material that is rigid. It will remove paint, rust and mill scale, as well as cleaning welds. (The parts must be baked at about 400 degrees for 15 minutes, so it will not work on magnetic items, or anything with grease in the part, like bearings.)

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a cabinet sandblaster to prepare a small metal part, clean and coat it with powder, and then bake it on in the powder coat oven. There is only time in class for sandblasting steel and aluminum parts.

Note: The sandblast cabinet and powder coating oven are large enough for motorcycle frames, bicycles and many other bulky items. Please visit your local TechShop and check the oven size if you have a specific project in mind.

Because of possible shock (high voltage, low amperage) with a powder coating gun, members with a pacemaker, or any voltage sensitive medical equipment are not allowed to take this course or use the equipment.

Once you have taken and successfully passed this class, you will be cleared to use the sandblasting cabinet, powder coating gun, powder spray booth, and powder coating oven.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

FAB108: Injection Molding SBU

The Morgan injection molding machine enables one to inexpensively fabricate from a few to many hundreds of identical parts molded from a large variety of thermoplastic materials.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will have the opportunity to fabricate several different plastic parts using molds that illustrate a variety of molding techniques. Once you have been completed this basic class, you will have the knowledge to safely operate the machine and set it up for your own mold and material.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

FAB201: Carbon Fiber Basics

In this class, you will learn the basics of carbon fiber layup, then combine raw carbon fiber cloth, a strengthener and 2-part, high-strength epoxy to make your very own carbon fiber key fob and take it home with you.

This class focuses on the "compression molding" technique of carbon fiber fabrication, which you can easily use to make your own custom carbon fiber parts. You may also use a scroll saw to cut out a particular shape for your carbon fiber key fob. You'll be surprised how easy it is to do your own carbon fiber fabrication of all sorts of parts, and you'll want to use carbon fiber for many of your projects.
