STEAM550: Multi-Day Design and Build Session

The Multi-Day Design and Build Session is designed to create a relaxed and non-pressured environment in which students learn and utilize a variety of tools. After every Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, each participant will complete a class project to demonstrate they have learned how to use the tool (e.g., laser etch dog tags, heat press a t-shirt, etc.).

Students will also have free time during some sessions to work on personal projects or one on one with Instructors to practice more advanced techniques. The sessions are great for reinforcing what students have learned and help them turn their ideas into a reality.

This course is great for beginners and introduces students to TechShop and all the programs and tools we have to offer.

Participants will learn and be passed on the following tools and software:

STEAM550: Parent and Child Heat Press and Vinyl Cutter SBU

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOUTH AGES 8-17 ONLY AND PARENT/GUARDIANS Are you ready to start making your own professional quality heat pressed shirts at TechShop?

In this hands-on class, you'll learn all the basics of using our vinyl cutter and heat press to add your own graphic designs to shirts, blankets, flags, bags, and more! Your instructor will guide you through the process, including how to create and cut out your own design using the CNC vinyl cutter, preparing a heat press vinyl, and transferring and setting it onto your shirt.

If you'd like to print a T-shirt or bag using your own artwork (approximately 6" x 6"), please bring a vectorized design saved as an .eps file. You're welcome to bring more than one design so the instructor can help you choose which one to use. Only one vinyl cutout will be created during class. Simple is best! Otherwise, the instructor will have some designs already prepared for you to choose from.

You do not need to take Concepts of CNC prior to taking this class. You do need to understand how vector-based graphics work, and you should be familiar with Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW. If you are not familiar with either of these programs, we offer classes in both, in the Computer (COM) section.

Once you have taken and successfully passed this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

Each slot in this course is for 1 parent/guardian and 1 child. Both students will be certified on our tools. To sign up, use the website to enroll the parent/guardian and pay, and then call the TechShop Front Desk to enroll your child.
