SPI530: Basic Techniques of Watercolor Washes with Clyde Beck

These courses are oriented toward the beginning watercolor artist or artists who are dabbling with watercolors as a new medium of expression. It is focused on the areas which are unique to painting in watercolor as compared with other mediums such as oil painting or acrylics. These areas center around the use of various color wash techniques, layering of transparency over other colors, controlling the flow of colors using wet into wet techniques, and direct painting.

About the Instructor

B. Clyde Beck has been seriously learning and doing watercolor painting since he was 12 years old. He has close to 60 years experience in making art with watercolors. He received art and architectural training at and graduated from Pratt Institute in 1966. Mr. Beck loves to paint “en plein aire” whenever he can and has painted subjects such as rural life in South Korea in the late 1960’s, rural barns in Virginia and the northeastern USA, various subjects such as flowers, landscapes, and seacoasts in Hawaii - particularly on Kauai, and various places in the western USA. His studio work has ranged from architectural renderings of buildings to fanciful compositions based on memory and/or photography he has done. Besides painting in a representational style he also dabbles in more contemporary techniques and ideas, all with watercolor
