STEAM101: After School: Design and Build Foundations (Mon & Wed)

TechShop’s hands-on STEAM programming is now available after school. Participants are immersed in a creative environment that covers science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Across every subject, they learn how to approach life as problem solvers.

Learn the basics of how to operate a full array of tools in this elemental course that spans 8 weeks of after-school sessions. After learning how to use digital design software to create your own custom personal logo, you'll bring it to life in a variety of materials using laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and standard shop tools. At the end of the session, you will have a solid understanding of how to go from idea to design to creation, plus you will be certified to use all the aforementioned tools at TechShop.

Design and Build is a foundational course that gives innovators safety clearance for the tools used in our STEAM program and prepares them for the next course. We will meet for 2-hour sessions, 2 days a week, for 8 weeks. Please arrive 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete registration.

Entrepreneurship

Robotics is a one-stop-shop for STEAM! (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math).

In this premium weekend camp, students collaborate to build a $10,000 high-tech robot!

These advanced robots are known as “PC-BOTS” and are built almost entirely from off-the-shelf computer parts. They assemble like a traditional home computer and even run Windows! The benefit is a 2-for-1 educational experience. Upon completion of the camp students will gain an understanding of personal computer hardware and autonomous mobile robots. The class covers important robotic sub-systems such as sensors, software, drive systems, machine vision, and artificial intelligence...in a fun, easy to follow, and engaging atmosphere.

Taught by robotics entrepreneur Thomas Burick, this premium camp delivers a motivational message to “pursue your dreams”. Thomas started his robotics company in the small repair shop of his computer retail store and grew the company into a multinational endeavor. His robots have been featured in Scientific American Magazine, BusinessWeek, Popular Science, and a host of other consumer and technical publications. His robots were featured on MTV and have been the subject of PBS robotics programs. In recent years Thomas has been motivated to pay these experiences forward to young robotics enthusiasts and young entrepreneurs. This camp is a must for young roboticists and fledgling entrepreneurs!
