STEAM: Basic Electronics After School: Running

TechShop’s beloved STEAM programming is currently running after school. Our students are immersed in a creative environment like nothing else. Our programs cover science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, but across every subject, we teach our students how to approach life as a problem solver.

Dive into the blinking, beeping, programmable world of electronics in this elemental course that spans over 15 weeks of after-school sessions. The course begins with an introductory primer that lays the groundwork on electricity, circuits, soldering, and using multimeters, as learned through mini project builds. Next, students will explore circuit design, learn about microcontrollers, and get started with Arduino. The large project build will be the fun and flashy LED cube.

This Basic Electronics class is a foundational class that will give your child the ground work to excel in more advanced electronics courses. This program will meet for 2-hour sessions, 1 day a week, for 15 weeks. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete our registration.

STEAM: Design & Build After-School Learning

TechShop's Design & Build after-school STEAM sessions introduce middle school and high school students to the engineering design process using laser cutters, 3D printers, and electronics.

Throughout this project-based curriculum, students identify design problems, brainstorm creative solutions, and prototype human-centered inventions using CAD (computer aided design) skills in Adobe Illustrator. Additionally, all students leave with a project of their own design, aimed at solving a problem in their everyday lives. Previous examples include programming alarm clocks, designing and laser cutting lamps, and modeling then 3D printing chess sets.

For more information about these after-school sessions, please contact your local TechShop:

STEAM101: After School: Design And Build Foundations

TechShop’s popular STEAM programming is now available after school. Our students are immersed in a creative environment like nowhere else. Our programs cover science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, but across every subject, we teach students how to approach life as problem solvers.

Learn the basics of how to operate a full array of tools in this elemental course that spans 15 weeks of after-school sessions. Participants begin by learning how to use digital design software to create their own custom personal logos. Then, they’ll bring their logos to life in a variety of materials using laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC desktop mills, vinyl cutters, and standard shop tools. At the end of the session, students will have a solid understanding of how to go from idea to design to creation, plus they’ll be certified to use all the aforementioned tools at TechShop.

This Design and Build program is a foundational class that will give your young maker safety clearance for the tools we use in our STEAM program and prepare them for the next course. This program will meet for 2-hour sessions, 1 day a week, for 15 weeks. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete our registration.

STEAM201: Advanced Inventor Sessions (16wk)

TechShop’s beloved STEAM programming is now available after school. Our students are immersed in a creative environment like nothing else. Our programs cover science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, but across every subject, we teach our students how to approach life as a problem solver.

Our project based STEAM course is where our students take their foundational knowledge they learned in our previous classes and put it to the test. The course has a major project for each STEAM discipline giving the student 5 unique portfolio pieces. Our projects teach core concepts of STEAM, but with the customizing, hacking, do it yourself spirit TechShop is known for.

Here are the projects covered in this 32-hour course:

SCIENCE:

LED-POWERING WIND TURBINE

Learn about the science of wind energy by making your own mini turbine. Build the circuit, then create and customize your turbine blades, and put it all together to see the power of wind in action as your turbine lights an LED.

TECHNOLOGY:

SOLAR-POWERED VIBROBOT

Explore BEAM robotics and the technology behind solar power by building your own robotic critter using simple components and small solar cells. Though these creatures are small, they have a lot of character and room for customization. How will your critter scuttle across a table?

ENGINEERING:

EGG-DROP CHALLENGE

Test your engineering chops and explore material properties by designing and building a protective carrier to prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from certain heights. Then put your design to the ultimate test. Will it work? There’s only one way to find out!

ART:

STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

In this course, learn about film production by being the set designer, prop builder, and director of your very own stop-motion animation short film. Combine your 3D printing and laser-cutting skills to create the scenery and characters for your original flick and share it with the world.

MATH:

BUILDING CATAPULTS

What factors determine how far a flung projectile flies? Put math concepts to work to design and build your own catapult. Then put your design to the test in the ultimate catapult contest. Whose catapult will fling the furthest?

This program will meet for 2-hour sessions, 1 day a week, for 16 weeks. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete our registration.
