WKS001: Internet of Things

Have you been wondering how to connect your toaster to the Internet? Or maybe you've been curious about the buzz going around.

This Internet of Things (IoT) workshop will be a great introduction to the world of connected devices. We'll provide background on the IoT world and help you dream up devices you may want to build on your own. We'll also cover basics of electronics and microcontrollers as well as the basics of building a simple web app to control an RGB LED.

Participants will each get their own Electric Imp, a WiFi-connected module with some inputs and outputs to build a basic IoT object.

It is recommended that students have taken basic electronics or Arduino I before the class but not necessary. Before class, participants may wish to sign up for a free account at Weebly.com and ElectricImp.com to prepare for the class.

WKS012: Knife Making

Knife making is an art of patience and craft. Learn how to make a knife from scratch using a combination of high powered tools and traditional knife making techniques. In this class you'll learn the basic fundamentals and tools for grinding an edge and heat treating metal. You'll be able to take advantage of the powerful waterjet by choosing a knife blade style and have it cut out for you. After receiving your knife blank you'll also get a matching acrylic handle that will be cut out using the laser cutters. With raw materials in hand and knowing the basics of knife making you'll have the ability to freely work on your knife with the provided equipment.

This workshop is not a Safety and Basic Use course. Students will only be passed on the Knife Making checkout kit (including a belt sander, torch, filing jig, but NOT the water jet).

With the world of app driven hardware and consumer products, this workshop will give students the basics in creating their own. Student will learn about serial communication between the bluetooth module and the Arduino and also learn about passing simple values over the bluetooth radio built into their Android tablets or phones to a low cost bluetooth module.

We will cover basic graphical programming using MIT's App Inventor 2. Student will be required to bring their own Android Tablet or Phone running 4.1 or higher.

Students will walk away with a kit including and Arduino compatible Trinket Pro, bluetooth module, and other necessary components. The maximum number of students would be 9.
