TXL1220: Textile Technology - Apparel and Soft Goods

In this workshop, we will introduce you to textile terminology and the differences in how fabrics are used in apparel versus accessories, home textiles and industrial design. You will learn how they are made and the special characteristics of each fabric.

Handouts, demonstrations with touch/feel and visual aids are included.

This is a great way to get educated about how fabrics perform and how to make the best choice for any application. The course is part science, part technology, and whole lot of style!

TXL1221: Textile Technology- Industrial Textiles

Expand your knowledge of the industrial technology world!

In Part 2 of the "Textile Technology" lecture series, students will have the opportunity to explore the industrial textile industry. This workshop is designed to provide a comprehensive knowledge of textiles as they relate to the design and development of the industrial sewn product. Terminology, organization, and structure of this industry will be highlighted. We will also cover the textile industry and the major developments in this century.

Each student will walk away with a booklet of fabric swatches.

TXL1263: Advanced Sewing Workshop- Deciphering Paper Patterns

Join TechShop DCA for a workshop in paper pattern making for garments! Students will learn the difference between three types of paper pre-sized patterns, understand markings, instructions, sewing legends and packaging. Students will also learn the correct way to cut, transfer, and piece paper patterns. Students will leave class with a breadth of knowledge on paper patterns and will be equipped to begin their own projects.

TXL1264: Advanced Sewing Workshop: Body Measurements and Tissue Fitting

Come learn the art of fitting! Students will learn to correctly take body measures to transfer into patterns. Students will also learn to tissue fit a paper pattern from their measurements and what to look for in terms of alterations needed in the pattern.

Students are encouraged to wear close fitting clothes to allow for accurate measurements.

TXL101: Basic Sewing Machine SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use a sewing machine. Acquire skills to correctly thread machine, fill and place the bobbin, and change the foot. Also learn to sew straight, zig-zag, basting, and other specialty stitches.

This machine sews through regular weight fabric but not heavy duty materials like leather or thick canvas. Go on to create messenger bags, rocket parachutes, clothing, plushies, sails, costumes, and more!

Project: Pocket bag

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Sewing machine

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the sewing machine outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

TXL103: CNC Embroiderer SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to create custom embroidery designs with the intuitive and easy-to-use Janome embroidery machine. Take part in several demos and become familiar with hooping methods, needles, threading, several types of stabilizers, and more. See how to create digitized stitches based on monogramming and logo art as well as clipart-style designs. New to digitizing? Take TXL204: Digitizer CNC Embroiderer Software next!

Project: Embroidered patch

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Embroidery machine

TXL110: Industrial Sewing Machines - SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the Juki straight (or single) stitch industrial sewing machine and the Juki industrial walking foot sewing machine. Practice methods of speed control and accuracy. Operate the presser foot with a knee lever and enjoy continuous bobbin winding. Then get to know the walking foot industrial sewing machine.

This powerful machine is perfect for working with heavyweight materials such as leather, canvas, or multiple layers of fabric. Experience the walking foot advantage as it moves both the top and bottom of the fabric to keep the fabric from shifting. Start sewing like a pro!

Project: Scissor pouch

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Industrial single stitch sewing machine and industrial walking foot sewing machine

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the industrial sewing machines outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the Juki four-thread industrial serger sewing machine. Get hands-on serger experience using overlock stitching to create high quality, soft-feeling seams and fine rolled hems. TXL304: Advanced Sewing Workshop

The Advanced Sewing workshop is a place to practice techniques, develop skills and get help. Come to class with a goal in mind and project in hand. This student-driven class does not rely on a handout or traditional instruction; instead, the class is driven by student questions and needs.

For example, you might want to learn hem techniques and advanced stitching, get feedback on pattern-making and draping or skills, or get advice on a specific project.

Project: None. Students will have access to basic black and white thread but must bring any other materials needed for their project.

Prerequisites:
  • Required: Must have passed the appropriate sewing Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class for the equipment you will be working on. If you're going to get help with the industrial serger, for example, you must have passed the Industrial Serger SBU. This is not an SBU and will not count towards machine access.

  • Recommended: 12 hours experience basic sewing, 6 hours experience on an industrial machine

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

TXL204: Digitizer Pro Embroiderer Software

In this lecture-based class, learn the many aspects of this feature-rich, digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork) software package by Janome. (The software also supports Brother.) See how embroidery designs are created from existing artwork, objects (e.g., shapes, text, and clipart), and original artwork. This software-focused class does not include time on the CNC embroidery machine. Prepare to start having fun printing art in thread!

Project: None

Prerequisites: None. However, successful completion of TXL103 CNC Embroidery Machine prior to taking this class is recommended.

Equipment access: Digitizer embroidery software

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.
