ART110: Leather Post Bound Book

In this spinoff from our Bookbinding 2: Post Binding class, students will make a custom leather bound book with as many pages as they want! The instructor will guide students through personalizing the covers of their books by laser etching a favorite quote, design, or picture onto leather. The class will then bind their books together with metal posts. Post binding is an incredibly versatile alternative to traditional, sewn binding- posts can be easily removed and swapped out for shorter or taller posts, so books can be handily made bigger or smaller. Post binding requires no sewing whatsoever, so it is also a perfect choice for younger makers!

Prerequisites: None! While this is a great companion class to our other bookbinding classes, no prior experience is necessary.

Please note that, while the laser is used during this class, this class will NOT grant the ability to use TechShop's laser cutters. If you wish to use the laser cutters outside of class, please sign up for LAS 103: Laser Cutting & Etching SBU.

ART1243: Copper and PMC Silver Metal Clay Jewelry/Kiln and Flex Shaft SBU

Learn how to handle, model, fire and finish both copper and PMC (fine silver) metal clay to create jewelry and other small metal objects. Under the instruction of an experienced metal clay artisan, you'll leave class with finished art pieces that are uniquely yours!

Metal clay is a highly versatile craft material that has improved dramatically in recent years. Tiny metal particles suspended in an organic binder are worked like clay, then dried and kiln-fired at high temperatures to become pure metal.

Fabrication techniques and technical info are covered in session one; in the second session, you’ll learn how to short-fire your silver clay in the multi-media kiln and explore numerous techniques for cleaning, embellishing and finishing the fired pieces. Also covered will be the safe use of our Flex Shaft, a powerful, timesaving tool used by jewelers in finishing metal objects.

We suggest you come prepared for this class with some workable designs in mind suitable for small (approximately 1") jewelry or metal objects.

This class has TWO SESSIONS at 2.5 hours each, for a total of 5 hours. Students who enroll in Day 1 of the class are also enrolling in the following class in the series. Class will be held at the same day and time the following week. Students who do not show up for BOTH sessions will not be passed for this class and will not receive a refund.

Basic materials will be provided (metal clay, basic tools, etc.)

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

ART1257: Silver Enameling/Kiln SBU

The art of enameling (fusing glass to metal) is especially beautiful on pure silver and can be used to make a variety of striking pieces.

In this class, you'll create colorful designs using fine-ground glass powders that are applied to silver using a variety of techniques and then fused by firing in a high temperature kiln. Layers of color can be built up using multiple quick firings. As part of this session, learn how to safely fire enameled silver in the multi-media kiln and leave with a properly finished piece of art that is uniquely yours.

We suggest you come prepared for this class with some simple workable designs in mind suitable for small (approximately 1") metal plaques. Students who successfully complete this workshop will be able to use the kiln to continue their work with this age-old art form.

ART1258: The Art of Cloisonné Enameling/Kiln SBU

Learn an important part of decorative enameling through exploring the cloisonné technique. Fine metal wires are fused to a copper blank, outlining your basic design. This is filled in with colorful fine-ground glass powders, and then glass is fused to metal by firing in a high temperature kiln. Color can be built up quickly using multiple firings. As part of this session, you will learn how to properly fire enameled copper in the multi-media kiln and leave with a finished piece of art that is uniquely yours. ART727: Leatherworking Basics - Create a Leather Key Fob

In this workshop, you’ll learn fundamental skills for working with leather and walk away with a key chain fob that you made yourself!

We’ll cover everything from pattern tracing and leather cutting to embossing designs using traditional tools. There will be eight designs to choose from, all of which will give you practice using a wide range of leather tooling techniques. While, yes, in this workshop we’ll be making something cool, a lot of emphasis will be put on practicing technique with some of the more specialized leather crafting tools. Swivel knife and stamping tools in particular are the focus of tools that you’ll be practicing with.

At the end of this workshop, you’ll have experience with pattern transferring, swivel knife work, how to properly case leather for tooling, tooling (stamping) designs, edge finishing and dressing, hardware setting and care of tools.

Please bring a USB flash drive if you’d like an .svg file of all the patterns offered in the class and the swivel knife practice worksheets.

Prerequisites: None, but you should be comfortable with the laser cutters and the woodshop tools.

ART107: Book Binding 2 - Post Binding

Post binding is a very simple and versatile bookbinding technique that anyone can master. Best of all, no sewing is involved! Instead, the book cover and pages are attached using special bookbinding screw posts.

The class begins with an overview of the post binding process and a brief presentation of the many types of books that can be created with this technique. Post binding is an especially great choice if you want to print and bind your own content (for example, family recipes, short stories you’ve written, an artist portfolio). The majority of the class will then focus on designing and creating your own custom book using binding board, book fabric, and decorative papers.

ART113: Silkscreen Printing Basics SBU

In this hands-on class, learn the basics of silkscreen printing. TechShop makes it easy by using vinyl stencils rather than photo-emulsion. Prepare a vinyl stencil, transfer onto a screen, apply ink to fabric through screen, and then heat set the ink. It’s that simple. You will learn the proper technique of applying Ink through a silkscreen while troubleshooting common mistakes so you can create your own custom products.

Want to print a t-shirt using your own artwork? Bring a simple black and white drawing that will be cut by hand. Participants who have passed the Vinyl Cutter Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class may bring in a pre-cut design to use. Otherwise, choose from several designs provided. Get ready to start making custom silkscreened t-shirts!

Project: Custom t-shirt
