STEAM201: Advanced Inventor Sessions (Tue & Thur)

TechShop’s popular, hands-on STEAM programming is now available after school. Students are immersed in a creative environment where they explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. And across every subject, they learn how to approach life as problem solvers.

In these project-based STEAM sessions, students take the foundational knowledge they learned in our foundational STEAM classes and put it to the test. There is one project for each STEAM discipline, giving students 5 unique portfolio pieces.

Projects covered in this 30-hour course:

SCIENCE: LED-POWERING WIND TURBINE

Learn about the science of wind energy by making your own mini-turbine. Build the circuit, then create and customize your turbine blades, and put it all together to see the power of wind in action as your turbine lights an LED.

TECHNOLOGY: SOLAR-POWERED VIBROBOT

Explore BEAM robotics and the technology behind solar power by building your own robotic critter using simple components and small solar cells. Though these creatures are small, they have a lot of character and room for customization. How will your critter scuttle across a table?

ENGINEERING: EGG-DROP CHALLENGE

Test your engineering chops and explore material properties by designing and building a protective carrier to prevent an egg from cracking when dropped from certain heights. Then put your design to the ultimate test. Will it work? There’s only one way to find out!

ART: STOP-MOTION ANIMATION

Learn about film production by being the set designer, prop builder, and director of your very own stop-motion animation short film. Combine your 3D printing and laser-cutting skills to create the scenery and characters for your original flick and share it with the world.

MATH: BUILDING CATAPULTS

What factors determine how far a flung projectile flies? Put math concepts to work to design and build your own catapult. Then put your design to the test in the ultimate catapult contest. Whose catapult will fling the furthest?

This program meets for 3-hour sessions, 2 days a week, for 5 weeks. Please show up 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete registration.

STEAM514: Design and Build Spring Break Camp

Design and Build Camp is a unique opportunity for young makers to learn and create using pro-level fabrication equipment.

Do you love to tinker, make, explore, and design? In this camp, you will bring your creations to life using TechShop equipment. You will learn to use CAD (computer aided design) skills in Autodesk and Adobe software before taking your projects to TechShop's laser cutters, 3D printers, and vinyl cutter. Skills in drafting, 3d modeling and prototyping will be focused on while you work on lesson challenges and custom projects.

Once you take and successfully pass this course, you will be certified to use the Trotec laser cutters, MakerBot 3D printers, vinyl cutter and heat pressing station at TechShop.

This one-week Summer Camp is designed for kids ages 8–17.

Camp runs from Monday through Friday, 9:30AM–3:30PM.

** All students must wear closed toed shoes and bring a sack lunch. **

STEAM516: Advanced Creator Sessions (M & W)

Our project based STEAM course is where our students take their foundational knowledge they learned in our previous classes and put it to the test. The course has two major projects for each STEAM discipline giving the student 5 unique portfolio pieces. Our projects teach core concepts of STEAM, but with the customizing, hacking, do it yourself spirit TechShop is known for.

Here are the projects covered in this 30-hour course:

SCIENCE: PAPER-CUT SHADOW LIGHT BOX

Bring together the science of light and the art of diffusion when you build a box frame, use design software to create shadow art, cut it out on the laser cutter, and

assemble with LEDs. tools: Shop tools, computer, laser cutter

TECHNOLOGY: LIGHT-UP TOTE BAG

Learn about soft, electronic-textile circuits as you design and sew a tote bag that lights up when you open it. With the basics of soft circuits, a world of possibilities awaits. tools: Sewing machine, soldering iron, heat press

ENGINEERING: ORNITHOPTER

Study winged flight by constructing a balsa monoplane whose design is based on the motion of birds flapping their wings. Put it to the test in a flight competition. tools: Shop tools

ART: LIFECASTING

Dive into the world of mold making by casting a mold of your hand using plaster and alginate. Craft a mount for your hand mold and make your own custom wall hanging. tools: Shop tools or laser cutter

MATH: BUILDING SCALE MODELS

How do we make miniatures look believable? It’s the scale. How do we figure out scale? Math! Choose an object to miniaturize and do the math to make it in small scale. tools: 3D printer, shop tools, laser cutter
