STEAM101: After School: Design and Build Foundations

TechShop’s hands-on STEAM programming is now available after school. Participants are immersed in a creative environment that covers science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Across every subject, they learn how to approach life as problem solvers.

Learn the basics of how to operate a full array of tools in this elemental course that spans 15 weeks of after-school sessions. After learning how to use digital design software to create your own custom personal logo, you'll bring it to life in a variety of materials using laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and standard shop tools. At the end of the session, you will have a solid understanding of how to go from idea to design to creation, plus you will be certified to use all the aforementioned tools at TechShop.

Design and Build is a foundational course that will give young innovators safety clearance for the tools we use in our STEAM program and prepare them for the next course. We will meet for 2-hour sessions, 1 day a week, for 15 weeks. Please arrive 10 minutes early on your first day so you can complete registration.

STEAM2105: 1-Day Camp - Tinkercad and 3D Printing

In this day camp, campers will learn 3D design by using basic elements to create awesome 3D models using Autodesk Tinkercad. Once they have completed model in the computer, campers will use the STEAM room's 3D printers to bring their models to life.

Since this is a Design and Build-style camp, participants are encouraged to attend more than one session, as each camp will be based on their creations and what the campers want to build.

Campers will take their builds home.

Project: Design and print a 2-cubic-inch creation of one's own design.

Everyone must wear closed-toe shoes.

Lunch will NOT be provided; please send your camper with a lunch!

STEAM2109: 1-Day Camp - Design and Build with Laser Cutters

In this day camp, campers will learn to design and build a creation of their own using a CorelDRAW file and the TechShop laser cutters.

Project: Design a creation and build it with the lasers

Since this is a Design and Build camp, campers are encouraged to attend more than one session as each camp will be based on campers' creations and what they want to build.

Campers will take their builds home.

Everyone must wear closed-toe shoes.

Lunch will NOT be provided; please send your camper with a lunch!

STEAM515: Youth Soldering and Basic Electronics

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOUTH AGES 8–17 ONLY!

Learn how to use solder and a soldering iron to make small stick figures as well as how to solder electronic "through-hole" components for electronic printed circuit board assembly (PCBs).

In this class, you will learn basic solder and flux types, safe soldering practices, and soldering iron maintenance. You will learn to de-solder using various techniques, including a "solder sucker" tool or solder braid.

This is a fun first class for kids and adults!

After taking this workshop, students will have passed the Soldering and Basic Electronics SBU.

Prerequisite(s): None

Equipment access: Soldering irons

Minimum age: 8 years

Supervision requirements: When using machines outside of class, 8- to 12-year-olds may only use equipment during "Supervised Maker Sessions" (classes and courses taught and supervised by TechShop Youth Education instructors). Members who are ages 12–15 must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU when using the tool outside of "Supervised Maker Sessions."

Note: All minors must have a Minor Liability Waiver filled out by a parent or guardian when dropped off at TechShop. These waivers will be provided at the Front Desk. Minors may not enter the building without the waiver.

Safety: Closed-toe shoes are mandatory.

STEAM600: Homeschool at TechShop Mid-Peninsula

TechShop’s popular hands-on STEAM programming is now available for homeschool students. Students are immersed in a creative environment that covers science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics that teaches them how to approach life as problem solvers.

Participants learn the basics of how to operate a full array of tools in this elemental course that spans 5 weeks of three-hour sessions. After learning how to use digital design software, students bring their designs to life in a variety of materials using laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, and standard shop tools. At the end of the session, students will have a solid understanding of how to go from idea to design to creation.

Design and Build is a foundational course that gives young innovators safety clearance for the tools we use in our STEAM program and prepares them for the next course. We will meet for 3-hour sessions, 1 day a week for 5 weeks. Please show up 10 minutes early on the first day so you can complete registration.

STEAM545: Youth Basic Sewing Machine SBU

THIS COURSE IS FOR YOUTH AGES 8-17 ONLY!

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use a sewing machine. Acquire skills to correctly thread machine, fill and place the bobbin, and change the foot. Also learn to sew straight, zig-zag, basting, and other specialty stitches.

This machine sews through regular weight fabric but not heavy duty materials like leather or thick canvas. Go on to create messenger bags, rocket parachutes, clothing, plushies, sails, costumes, and more!

Project: Pocket bag

Prerequisite(s): None!

Equipment access: Sewing machine

Minimum age: 8 years

Supervision requirements: When using the sewing machines outside of class time, 8- to 12-year-olds may only use equipment during "Supervised Maker Sessions" (classes and courses taught and supervised by TechShop Youth Education instructors). Members who are 12-15 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU when using the tool outside of "Supervised Maker Sessions."

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!
