WKS: Electric Bike Workshop

Take your next project off the grid with this introductory electric bike workshop!

This 6-hour course will get you hands-on with the latest in electric bike performance, fabrication, and modifications taught by experienced ebike fabricator and TechShop member Paul Trainer!

2 hours of instruction in the classroom covering the following:
  • Ebike component choices and trades
  • Motor types and choices
  • Bicycle frame choices and trades
  • Throttles and pedal assist setups
  • Battery choices and trades
  • Brakes, including regenerative braking
  • Electronic speed controllers
  • Electronic ebike computers
  • Battery chargers
  • Ebike part manufacturing using a 3D printer, ShopBot, Tormach, and laser cutter
  • Performance simulations to compare design choices4 hours of hands-on experience where students will participate in the construction of an electric bike with the following components:
    • 1200 watt direct drive motor and speed controller
    • Inexpensive fat tire bike
    • Throttle setup and calibration
    • Brake upgrade
    • Pedal assist setup
    • Battery charger assembly and testing
    At the end of the workshop, students will have an opportunity to ride the electric bike they helped build.

    WKS804: Leatherworking Basics - Make a Leather Wallet

    I love the smell of laser burnt leather in the morning! How many times have you said that? Not many ... but how many times have you hunted for the ideal wallet? Too many!

    In this workshop, you will learn how to design patterns and artwork on the computer, then cut your patterns and carve your artwork into leather with a laser. You will also learn leather sewing techniques and apply them to assemble your highly personalized wallet!

    Please note: Workshops utilize TechShop’s equipment; all shop rules apply – unless you have passed our required safety courses (SBU's) your instructor will assist you on the equipment. This is not an SBU workshop – you must pass the appropriate Safety and Basic Use class to use TechShop's equipment unattended.

    WKS994: Make a Pet Hoodie

    Use the skills you learned in our Basic Sewing Machine class to recycle one of your human hoodies or articles of clothing as an adorable accessory for your feline or canine friend.

    You'll learn the basics of using a pattern and sewing a garment in this workshop and leave with a personalized, pet-sized garment made from your own old clothing.

    Prerequisite: TXL Basic Sewing Machine SBU

    Materials: Bring your own hoodie or other garment. We'll take care of the rest.

    WKS530SJ: Coffee Workshop: DIY Home Roasting

    Who doesn't love a good cup of coffee first thing in the morning? If you're ready to take the next step to becoming a true coffee aficionado, then come learn the first steps to making coffee; roasting your own beans!

    In this workshop attendees will learn the basics of coffee roasting using a simple method anyone can do at home. Various types of roasting machines and processes will be discussed, as well as differences in roast levels, bean varieties, and bean production processes.

    This hands-on experience will teach you the fine art of brewing the perfect cup of coffee, as well as experience the sensory evaluation of a freshly roasted and brewed cup of coffee.
