WOD101: Wood Shop SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to safely operate the core machines in the TechShop Wood Shop, including the sliding compound miter saw, SawStop table saw, wood drill press, wood band saw and the belt and disk sanders. You will perform various operations on all of these machines to gain comfort and proficiency with the operation and usage of these tools.

You'll be amazed at what you can build in the wood shop once you've taken this class.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

WOD102: Hand Tool Basics

This is a great skill building class for adults who may have missed high school shop class or are looking to familiarize themselves with these tools before undertaking a DIY project. The class is also ideal for young people who are interested in learning how these tools can empower them to build whatever they imagine, from a skate ramp to a backyard roller coaster.

In this class, you will learn how to safely operate a number of the most frequently used hand tools. Your Instructor will guide you through the proper techniques to cut, shape, assemble and finish a small project.

WOD103: Wood Lathe SBU

On TechShop's large, powerful wood lathe, you can turn wooden bowls, pens, table legs and endless other items from wood.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn to safely use the lathe to make wooden parts. You will learn to set up the lathe, prepare the raw materials and use the different wood turning tools. 

The class will cover both spindle turning (for items like chair legs) and faceplate turning (for items like bowls).

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

WOD104: Metal Spinning

Learn to safely spin metal on the wood lathe, and then use your woodturning techniques to manufacture hard maple tooling to use to spin pewter, aluminum, copper, brass or silver into beautiful and functional products.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to set up the lathe, prepare the raw materials and use the different metal spinning tools. You will also learn how to safely use the lathe to spin metal using wooden tooling.

The project is a small aluminum bowl.

Prerequisite: You MUST have successfully completed the Wood Lathe SBU before taking this class.

WOD201: Jointer, Planer and Table Router SBU

Add a whole new set of precision tools to your woodworking arsenal when you learn how to use the jointer/planer and table router. These tools can be used to turn rough lumber into finished boards ready for your projects, create complex profiles for edge finishing and joinery operations, and more.

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to safely operate the jointer/planer and table router. We will cover proper technique and basic usage of the equipment, and you will perform a variety of cuts on a plank of wood to practice with these tools.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

WOD304: Advanced Woodworking - Joinery

Wood joinery is the foundation of building furniture and wooden structures. Joints can be very simple and purely functional or they can be complex and elegant, requiring a master level of artistry and skill to produce.

In this class, you will learn joint-making techniques as well as highly valuable theory and background information as they apply to joint making. You will learn when to use certain joints, which joints are the strongest, how grain direction influences joint strength, glue selection, pre-gluing techniques, proper clamping and much more. This class will provide the foundation needed to create virtually any wood structural project.

Class time will be split between discussing theory in the classroom and learning joinery techniques and creating joints in the woodshop.

Prerequisites:To participate in this class, you must pass the Wood Shop SBU (WOD101) and Planer, Jointer and Router Table SBU (WOD201).
