Basic Sewing Machine SBU
It’s a soldering iron for fabric! A glue gun with thread! A fiber sculpting machine! Learn how to take advantage of our sewing machines to build your dreams with fabric. In this class, you will get hands-on experience with our sturdy and strong but easy to use sewing machines. Each student will get to make a small pocket bag.
Students of this class have gone on to create messenger bags, rocket parachutes, leather accessories, clothing, plushies, sails, costumes, battery packs with zippers. One student even repaired his ice skates!
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC Embroiderer SBU
Take our newly enhanced CNC Embroiderer SBU to learn how to use our embroider machine! You'll get to take part in several demos and get familiar with hooping methods, needles, threading, several types of stabilizers, and more. You'll see how to create digitized stitches based on monogramming and logo art as well as clip art style designs. You will make a fun small project. This class is required for operation of the TechShop embroidery equipment.
If you're new to digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork), we highly recommend that you take the CNC Embroiderer Digitizer Pro Software Lecture after taking this class.
Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

CNC Embroiderer Digitizer Pro Software
Pop your knowledge of the digitizing process and quickly start having fun printing your own art in thread.
Join us for this computer-based lecture class where we'll have fun covering many many aspects of this feature-rich digitizing software package, Janome's Digitizer Pro.
If you're new to digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork), this is a great place to start. We'll discuss aspects of digitizing you will want to be aware of as you print with thread.
Learn how to work with existing art as well as digitize your own objects including shapes and text, get introduced to the features you can use to control the sew-out of your designs, and more.
This class is all about the software. For several hands-on demos of actual embroidering, including how to hoop and the handling of stabilizer, take the CNC Embroiderer SBU. There's a slight advantage to taking the SBU before this class but it's not required.
This 2-hour class will most likely save you weeks of exploring on your own.

I Can Sew - Now What?
You know how to operate a sewing machine. Now what? How do you make something? How do you choose and buy fabric? Find a pattern? Make your own pattern? We will explore everything you need to know to get started on an idea you already have or pick an existing pattern and use it. We'll cover buying, cutting, piecing, and ways of sewing to preserve your fingers and get the shape you want.
Everyone will get to make their own simple pattern, cut it out of fabric, and sew it on any sewing machine for which you have passed the SBU. You might want to plan on staying after this class is over to complete your project.
