|TechShop Partners with Cortex to Expand to St. Louis|
|The national chain of makerspaces to open its doors in Cortex in 2016|
, January 19, 2015 --
TechShop,a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, today announced plans to open its first location in St. Louis in partnership with Cortex.
Founded in northern California, TechShop is a national chain of makerspaces that attract entrepreneurs, students, hobbyists and big businesses alike, helping them to bring ideas to life with state-of-the-art equipment and collaborative design space. The St. Louis location will be in the heart of the Cortex Innovation Community, offering a vital new dimension to the district’s innovation offering.
“St. Louis is known for the spirit of exploration, and has a rich history in science, medicine, education and the arts,” said Dan Woods, COO of TechShop. “TechShop is proud to partner with Cortex to bring our first location to the Midwest and to help St. Louis grow as a center of innovation in the region in the years to come.”
Cortex will construct a new three-story building at the corner of Boyle and Forest Park Avenues that will serve as TechShop St. Louis’ new home, with TechShop occupying approximately 18,000 square feet on the first floor.
The new 60,000-square-foot building will also provide additional space to house other technology-related companies. The site design will include a generous sidewalk with green space running along the building from Forest Park Avenue to the soon-to-be-completed three-and-a-half acre Cortex Common. There will also be an outdoor seating area to support a café on the south side of the building with views of the Commons. The concept design will be finalized by mid-February and include design elements consistent with other new buildings in the district.
“TechShop is a key district innovation element that will support and grow the entrepreneurial community in Cortex and throughout the St. Louis metro area,” said Dennis Lower, President and CEO of Cortex. “As a nationally recognized innovation leader, TechShop will inspire our region’s makers, artisans and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into tangible products. The addition of quality makerspace in Cortex has the power to accelerate innovation by saving time and cost at the prototyping stage of product development. Whether you are a hobbyist or a biomedical engineer, we are excited to see how the St. Louis creative community will use this valuable, enabling resource.”
World-Class Creative Workspace and Prototyping Studio
• More than $1 million worth of machines, tools and equipment
Total development costs of the new building are estimated to be $23.9 million, with project funding coming from conventional bank debt, a State CDBG grant and State Supplemental TIF funds. TechShop anticipates opening its new doors in St. Louis in fall 2016.
