CHANDLER, Ariz. and SAN JOSE, Calif.
, November 11, 2014 --
TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, is celebrating the one-year anniversary of its shop in the Chandler Innovation Center at Arizona State University.
To mark the milestone, TechShop will host a special event at the facility on Saturday, November 15. The event will run from 11:00AM to 2:00PM and consist of exciting demonstrations of 3D printers and laser cutters, a showcase of student and community member creations, and comments from TechShop and partners ASU, National Instruments, and the City of Chandler.
“Partnering with ASU at the Chandler Innovation Center has proven to be an ideal way for TechShop to expand its mission to embrace higher education,” said Dan Woods, chief operating officer of TechShop. “It’s incredibly satisfying to see the passion and creativity of students and Chandler area makers come to life at TechShop Chandler.”
The workspace at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center is TechShop’s first academic partnership, following corporate and government partnerships. TechShop and ASU broke new ground to ensure student access to the benefits of the maker movement: all full-time ASU students receive free membership and equipment training, helping them develop measurable and practical problem-solving skills, learn how to execute effectively and gain technical experience that’s exclusive to TechShop.
“As a higher education leader in the maker movement, ASU is proud to offer our students unprecedented access to more than $1M worth of prototyping equipment,” said Mitzi Montoya, Vice President and University Dean for Entrepreneurship + Innovation at ASU. “This past September, we began offering free memberships to any full-time ASU student. In only two months, we have seen over 500 students sign up to take advantage of this amazing resource.”
TechShop Chandler has already seen many exciting and creative projects from local makers and student members, which range from modified wheelchairs for U.S. military veterans to whale-shaped iPhone holders for charging.
Moving Forward: A New Electronics Lab by NI
The TechShop Chandler proximity to ASU was especially interesting to NI because of its own developing collaboration with the university around student innovation, research, international programs, and professional development.
"The integration of maker spaces along with access to real-world engineering tools gives students more opportunities to learn by doing," said Ray Almgren, NI Vice President of Corporate Marketing. "NI is excited to work with TechShop and ASU to inspire innovation and provide the resources and tools needed to ensure students are prepared for success in the workplace."
