TechShop Launches The TechShop Makerspace Academy
A comprehensive guide to designing a makerspace based on proven innovative learning platform
SAN JOSE, Calif. , May 4, 2015 --

TechShop, Inc., a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, today announced the launch of The TechShop Makerspace Academy, the world’s first comprehensive, step-by-step custom workshop developed to walk educators and librarians through the critical steps of designing, equipping and operating successful, safe and inspirational public makerspaces based on the TechShop model.

As increasing numbers of schools and public libraries receive the green light to develop their own makerspaces focused on supporting STEAM education, community innovation and the arts, they face the exciting and often complex challenges of planning the space, buying and installing tools and machinery, training staff, implementing appropriate curriculum and workshops, and adopting safety standards and protocols. The TechShop Makerspace Academy was specifically developed for educators, library staff, school administrators, or anyone leading the charge in devising, building, and managing safe and productive publicly-accessible makerspaces in a school or library.

“A leader in the design and operation of world-class makerspaces worldwide, TechShop created The TechShop Makerspace Academy’s curriculum using the know-how and standards we have developed over the past nine years with 7,000 members at eight locations across North America,” said Dan Woods, TechShop COO. “Through this initiative, we hope to bolster education efforts to accelerate the maker movement and advance STEAM education in schools and libraries nationwide, and foster the future generations of innovators.”

The TechShop Makerspace Academy benefits include:

  • Graduates of the intensive three-and-a-half day academy will receive The TechShop Makerspace Academy Certification showing successful completion of the most comprehensive and relevant training in makerspace construct and operation currently available
  • Extensive hands-on training in the selection, installation, instruction, troubleshooting and maintenance of a wide range of equipment and tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, a desktop mill, and CAD software
