TechShop Gears Up for Maker Action
TechShop keynote at MakerCon and exhibit at Maker Faire Bay Area
SAN JOSE, Calif. , May 13, 2014 --

TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with eight locations nationwide, kicks off the biggest week of the year for Bay Area makers with a MakerCon keynote on May 13 and stretches through Maker Faire Bay Area the weekend of May 17–18.

“Whether you’re a grown-up wanting to drive a giant cupcake car or a small child demoing your hardware invention, Maker Faire events across the country have propelled the Maker movement to a fun and accessible state of mind,” said Jim Newton, TechShop founder. "It is no coincidence that we are based in the same region as the highly attended Maker Faire Bay Area. This is a great place for makers."

At MakerCon, an inaugural conference by and for makers, TechShop CEO Mark Hatch will deliver a keynote speech that elaborates on his book, The Maker Movement Manifesto. Published by McGraw-Hill Education, the book offers Hatch’s first-hand observations and insights on the rules for innovation in the new world of crafters, hackers and tinkerers. Hatch will speak on May 13 from 1:40–2:00PM PT. MakerCon is taking place at the Oracle Conference Center in Redwood City.

Following MakerCon, TechShop will shift to an action-packed weekend of demos and hands-on activities at the Bay Area’s Maker Faire, often called the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth. The biggest gathering of makers in the world, Maker Faire Bay Area will be held at the San Mateo Event Center on May 17th and 18th. TechShop has been a presence at all nine of the annual gatherings.

Visit Booth #212 for partner demos, including Autodesk's 123D Make program, and learn more about taking classes and attending special events at all three Bay Area TechShop locations. Whether curious about 3D printing and other prototyping technologies or looking to bring a big idea to bring to life, attendees will find something for every interest.

About Maker Faire
Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth – a family-friendly showcase of invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker movement. It's a place where people of all ages and backgrounds gather together to show what they are making and share what they are learning.

Maker Faire celebrated 100 Faires in 2013 alone and has reached over 1.5 million attendees globally since it launched in San Mateo, Calif., in 2006, less than a year after the publication of the first MAKE Magazine in 2005. The eighth annual Maker Faire Bay Area welcomed some 950 makers and 120,000 attendees. World Maker Faire New York, the other flagship event, has grown in four years to 600+ makers and 75,000 attendees. Detroit, Kansas City, Rome, Oslo, Newcastle (UK), Tokyo and Shenzhen host our "featured" Maker Faires (200+ makers), and community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires inspire and ignite creative communities everywhere around the United States and internationally.

Located in Sebastopol, Calif., Maker Media has been widely credited with jumpstarting the worldwide Maker movement, which has been a transforming force in innovation, culture, and education. In addition to publishing MAKE Magazine and producing Maker Faire, Maker Media develops "getting started" kits and books it sells through its Maker Shed store as well as other retail channels.
