TechShop DC-Arlington Location Opens in Crystal City Neighborhood
DIY makerspace to foster growth and innovation in the DC Area
SAN JOSE, Calif. , April 16, 2014 --

TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio with locations nationwide, has opened its eighth facility today at 2110-B Crystal Drive in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, VA. The new shop serves Crystal City and the Washington, DC metro area and will activate makers across communities around our nation’s capital. TechShop DC-Arlington will celebrate its grand opening from 11AM-4PM on Saturday, June 21, 2014. 

“Whether they’re veterans, active military, or students and entrepreneurs, new members will find that Crystal City is the ideal DC area location to access TechShop,” said Mark Hatch, co-founder and CEO of TechShop. “As we bring TechShop, the maker movement and the tools of innovation to the thriving technology ecosystem in our nation’s capital, we’ll be eager to see the inventions and small businesses that will spring from DC makers and potentially change the world.”

The birthplace of prototypes for Square, DODOcase and many other hardware innovations, TechShop will energize creative individuals and dedicated makers in the local community to build their dreams, whether they are personal projects or startups perfecting a first device. Makers can visit TechShop DC-Arlington seven days a week from 9AM to midnight. In addition, TechShop CEO Mark Hatch will be speaking about the Maker Movement at the USA Science & Engineering Festival at Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 11:00AM to 12:00 noon. TechShop’s exhibit at the festival will be located at booth #5221 (Hall D).

World-Class Creative Workspace and Prototyping Studio
TechShop members have access to a world-class workshop with machines, tools, training, and the inspiration and support they need to pursue their passions, develop new skills and launch new businesses. Each location includes:

•        More than $1 million worth of machines, tools and equipment 
•        Hundreds of classes each month for members and non-members
•        Friendly, knowledgeable and highly trained staff
•        A community of innovative makers, artists and entrepreneurs 
•        Group event spaces and workshops

The new TechShop DC-Arlington is made possible by a continued partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs Center for Innovation (VACI) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), as well as GE and Vornado.

Skills Development Program for Veterans
As part of the partnership with VACI and GE's Get Skills to Work (GSTW) initiative, TechShop has provided free membership and training to over 1,000 veterans through the GE GSTW coalition.  An additional 1,000 openings in the program are now available as of April 1, 2014. The Skills Development Program at TechShop is sponsored by GE and VACI to promote advanced manufacturing, up-skilling and entrepreneurism. These memberships include professional instruction; hands-on training; access to TechShop’s well-appointed workspaces, machines and tools; and a supportive community of product designers, developers and engineers. Extending TechShop’s Reach 
In addition to TechShop’s 6,000 individual members, corporations are increasingly turning to TechShop as a strategy for inspiring creative thinking, developing new workforce skills and fueling innovation. Universities have also recognized the benefits of the Maker Movement and are partnering with TechShop as an open innovation studio for their faculty, students and alumni.
