Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here is an FAQ list to help with the most popular questions. You may also refer other questions, comments or concerns to the email address We will be posting updates on the Menlo Park location page as well.

All requests from media should be sent to

1. When do you need to be out of the current location? When will members lose access to the shop?

We must be completely out of the building by October 31, 2013.

We won't have a clear understanding of when the last day for members to access the current Menlo Park shop will be until we identify a temporary location. But it is likely that we will close TechShop Menlo Park about three weeks before our lease ends to facilitate the move. Our goal is to minimize interruption of service as much as possible.

We will run classes until the last possible day in the current shop and resume them as soon as we can in the temporary location.

2. How long have you known about needing to vacate?

While we have been aware of the development company's long term plans for the space, we received our 90-day notice in mid August, 2013.

3. Why such short notice?

We've always known our landlord had long term redevelopment plans for the area and that we would need to move someday. Earlier this year, it started to look like that date was approaching. We've been working with the landlord and anticipated being able to negotiate an early 2014 move, but this did not happen as planned.

4. Where is your ideal location for the new store?

Within five or so miles of the current store. Moving farther north has certain advantages. Moving farther south makes less sense, given the proximity to TechShop San Jose.

Additional requirements:

  • 10,000 to 15,000 square feet
  • 10' to 14' clear height
  • Safe parking for up to 40 cars; some street parking is fine
  • Slab concrete floor. If a second floor, an operable freight elevator
  • Power: 800 amp service at 240V

5. What happens to my membership? May I pause my auto-pay for monthly membership during the transition? Can I get a refund?

Your membership will remain active and valid. We are working around the clock to ensure there is as little disruption as possible. And as always, you are more than welcome to use your membership at TechShop San Jose or TechShop San Francisco.

6. Where can I get more information?

We held two identical information meetings at the Menlo Park location on August 24 and 25, 2013. The highlights of Sunday's meeting can be seen here

You may also email for more information.

7. How can I help?

If you know of a space that meets our criteria, we'd love to hear from you. Email us at If you have interest in becoming a lender and helping us meet our goals that way, click here for more information.

8. What changes or upgrades can we expect at the new store?

The new TechShop Menlo Park will be bigger and better than ever. We plan to reuse equipment and furniture wherever appropriate, but rest assured you'll see some major upgrades- both to the equipment and to the facility itself.

9. Is there a chance Menlo Park will close and not re-open like Raleigh-Durham?

Despite having two other Bay Area locations, we have proven there is a need for all three locations in the Bay Area. This is a matter of updating our current location and facility offerings to the large numbers of committed members.
