MAC101: Milling Machine SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn basic operations of the vertical milling machine to safely select speeds, change end mills, use the digital readout, and secure work needed to accurately machine parts. Explore the theory of how to successfully choose the correct end mill and speed setting. Work precisely with metal and plastics to cut, drill and surface parts.
Project: Aluminum business card holder
Prerequisite(s): None. However, MTL101, Basic Metal Shop is recommended.
Equipment access: Milling machine
Minimum age: 16
Supervision requirements: All 16- to 17-year-olds must attend class with a parent or guardian and be supervised, while using the mill, by a parent/guardian who has passed the SBU.
- Required: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, and short sleeves. Tie hair back or secure under a cap and remove all jewelry.
