WKS712: Chair Making Workshop 4: Finishing and Assembly

In this workshop, students will be introduced to various types of finishes including dye, stain, shellac, lacquer, varnish and paint and two finishing techniques - brushing and HVLP spraying. The first part of the session will cover basic safety in working with the selected finishes and proper handling of the HVLP spray system. Using the parts for the standard chair, joint taping, application of a sanding sealer coat and use of the HVLP spray gun will be demonstrated. The session will conclude with the assembly of the chair with wood glue and clamps.

Homework assignment: Students will stain or dye as desired, apply finish and glue chair together. Plan your next project to make more chairs!

Workshop Session 2 - Material Preparation. Prerequisites: WOD101: Woodshop SBU and WOD201: Jointer, Planer and Table Router SBU

Workshop Session 3 - Mortise and Tenons. Prerequisites: CNC302: CNC ShopBot SBU
