WLD102: MIG Welding SBU
Class Number 338-29655
In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/4" thick.
MIG (metal inert gas) welding -- also called GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and wire feed welding -- is a semi-automatic method of welding, using a solid wire and shielding gas. With some equipment changes, MIG welding can be used for a small variety of different metals, such as stainless steel and aluminum. Many MIG welding machines can also run a tubular, flux cored wire that does not require a shielding gas (called flux cored arc welding, or FCAW).
For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.
If it has been at least 9 months since you took this class and you have not used the machine since then, you must re-take the SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first SBU. Anyone can re-take any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed for half price. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special price.
Passing this class is a requirement to use this equipment at TechShop
