In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the serger sewing machine to sew and hem fabric. Learn basic operations such as threading, adjusting stitch length and feed ration, and fixing broken thread. Get hands-on serger experience using overlock stitching to create high quality, soft-feeling seams and fine rolled hems. This machine sews regular weight fabric, not leather or thick canvas. Expect to increase productivity after learning this efficient machine.

Equipment access: Serger sewing machine

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the serger sewing machine outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are require
