MTL301: Blacksmithing SBU
Class Number 27-28557

Learn forge and tool safety and basic blacksmithing techniques!

In this Safety and Basic Safety (SBU) class, you will make a classic introductory piece: the drive hook. This project is a favorite of teaching smiths everywhere as it provides an introduction to several basic techniques while producing a functional and decorative piece. We will be operating a small DIY-style propane forge, a common forge design for the hobbiest blacksmith. It is simple to construct and fuel is readily available in the form of gas grill bottles. The small gas forge we use weighs a little less than 20 pounds and can perform its job of heating metal admirably.

For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers in the blacksmithing area, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes while at TechShop.

Note: This class is labor intensive; if you are unsure that you can use a large hammer for over an hour and a half, please let us know and we will make accommodations to suit you.

Passing this class is a requirement to use this equipment at TechShop
