MAC102: Metal Lathe SBU

The lathe is used to create detailed cylindrical or tapered objects in plastic or metal. In this Safety and Basic Use course (SBU), learn the basic operations of metal turning on the lathe to safely select speeds, select and change cutting tools, use the digital readout, and secure work to make accurate cuts. Explore the theory of how to choose the correct cutter and speed setting.

Project: Aluminum refrigerator magnet

Prerequisite(s): None. However, knowledge of basic metal shop tools is recommended

Equipment access: Metal lathe

Minimum age: 16

Supervision requirements: During class, all 16- and 17-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the metal lathe outside of class time, 16- and 17-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety

  • Mandatory: Closed-toed shoes, eye protection, and short sleeves. Tie hair back or secure under a cap and remove all jewelry.

  • Advisable: Hearing protection
