WLD102MP: MIG Welding SBU
Class Number 2-20673

In this Safety and Basic Use class (SBU), you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/4" thick.

Welding is the process of fusing materials together. "MIG" stands for "Metal Inert Gas". Other names for MIG include Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Wire Feed welding. MIG welding is a semi-automatic method of welding, using a solid wire and shielding gas. With some equipment changes, MIG welding can be used for a small variety of different metals, such as Stainless Steel and Aluminum. Many MIG welding machines can also run a tubular, flux cored wire that does not require a shielding gas, which is called Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW).

For your safety, long pants and long sleeved shirt in natural fibers are required in the Hot Shop, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at TechShop.

Under 18 Policy: All students under 18 years of age MUST be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Both must register for a seat in class.

If it has been at least 9 months since you took this class and you have not used the machine since, you must re-take the SBU, which is offered at half price if you successfully passed the first SBU. Anyone can re-take any SBU at TechShop that they have previously taken and passed for half price. Please sign up with the front desk in order to ensure this special price.

Passing this class is a requirement to use this equipment at TechShop
