WLD301: Advanced Welding Lab

The MIG and TIG welding lab is a place to practice techniques, develop skills, and get help. Come to class with a goal in mind and project in hand. This student-driven class does not rely on a handout or traditional instruction; instead the class is driven by student questions and needs.
Examples: Weld very thin steel, make clean welds on tubing, receive feedback on skills, get advice on fixturing a difficult workpiece.
Students must have taken and passed the appropriate welding Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class; if you're going to get help with TIG welding, for example, you must have passed the TIG SBU. This is not an SBU and will not count towards machine access.
Project: None. Students will have access to welding coupons and filler rod but must bring any other materials needed for their project.
- Required: Must have passed the appropriate MIG or TIG welding SBU for the equipment you will be working on
- Recommended: 12 hours experience TIG welding, 6 hours experience MIG welding
Minimum age: 12
Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.
When using the welder outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.
- Mandatory: Welding helmet, closed-toed shoes made of natural fibers or leather, natural fiber or leather long sleeved shirt,natural fiber or leather long pants. Welding hood, gloves and jacket supplied by TechShop.
- Advisable: Leather welding jacket, leather welding pants, leather boots, respirator
