EEE103: Arduino Part 1 - Building An Arduino - Educato

The Arduino is a microcontroller; a small computer that has a single function. Microcontrollers run everyday items like toaster ovens, electronic toys and MP3 players. An Arduino can be programmed to monitor sensors and watch for inputs like temperature, pressure, light, voltage or a button or switch. It can also be programmed to control switches, relays, motors and other outputs. There are many add on boards, called shields, that add features like WiFi, GPS and card readers.

Electronic "smarts" can be added to projects to make them interactive. For example, a pet door could be modified to lock if it's dark outside and the temperature is below 45 degrees.

This class is the first step in using the Arduino: soldering the parts onto the circuit board. Come to class with some basic soldering experience and get help and guidance while assembling the board.

Materials fee includes an Arduino Educato that you keep for your own projects.

This class is an introduction to the use of microprocessors and uses the Arduino. This is Part 2 of the Arduino Electronics Series. Part 1 is building your first Aduino board although you can skip that class and just buy one if you like.

Please bring the Barebones Arduino board you built in the Arduino Part 1 class, the BUB board and a laptop with the Arduino software and drivers pre-installed. The software may be downloaded from Arduino Software. If you do not have a laptop, call your TechShop store to see if there is a computer for rent, or if the class will take place in a computer lab.

In this class, you will learn how to use an Arduino in simple projects. We will cover programming and the simple electronics need to connect an Arduino to switches, dials, brightness, temperature and other sensors; and to lights, motors and other output devices. The three hours will switch between instruction, hands-on and some free time.

This is a fast track class for people who want to add simple automation to their projects. Example programs will be provided. You can cut and paste from the examples to start writing your own programs.

The class fee includes a breadboard, switch, sensors, motor, LEDs and various electronic components.

Prerequisites: You must have an Arduino that can be used with a breadboard, that is, with male headers pointing down in the power rail and "front" edge holes (A0, RST, GND, +5, digital 0-13, and GND). You can either use the board you built in Part 1 Building an Arduino - Educato, or you can bring an Arduino -ompatible board.

If you bring your own laptop, you MUST pre-download and install the Arduino software and drivers.

There are a few laptops for rent at the Detroit store; please reserve ahead by calling the Front Desk.

FAB106: Sand Blasting and Powder Coating SBU

Powder coating is a durable, simple to apply, easy to clean up, product. It is inexpensive, and more environmentally friendly than paint, as it has no VOCs and no solvents are used. The final product is more durable than paint, and powder is available in many colors and finish types.

The sand blaster can be used on metal, wood, glass, mirror, plastics and almost any material that is rigid. It will remove paint, rust and mill scale, as well as cleaning welds. (The parts must be baked at about 400 degrees for 15 minutes, so it will not work on magnetic items, or anything with grease in the part, like bearings.)

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a cabinet sandblaster to prepare a small metal part, clean and coat it with powder, and then bake it on in the powder coat oven. There is only time in class for sandblasting steel and aluminum parts.

Note: The sandblast cabinet and powder coating oven are large enough for motorcycle frames, bicycles and many other bulky items. Please visit your local TechShop and check the oven size if you have a specific project in mind.

Because of possible shock (high voltage, low amperage) with a powder coating gun, members with a pacemaker, or any voltage sensitive medical equipment are not allowed to take this course or use the equipment.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

    MAC900: Machine Shop Lab

Have you ever had a project, but just did not know how to approach it? If so, the Machine Shop Lab is for you. Think of it as a combination between an expert consultation and a brainstorming session with like-minded makers and innovators. In this lab, students will discuss machine shop theory as well as practical applications--their applications.

The concept of this lab, is to provide access to a TechShop instructor, and discuss the projects and concepts that you desire. This lab is an open forum environment that will allow students to discuss machine shop subjects like: order of operations, work holding, tooling options as well as coating options, and other machine shop specific content.

This lab will be an open format with no more than 4 participants, allowing each student the opportunity to have a section of time devoted to their project. Each participant may bring projects or topics that they would like to discuss, or just show up, contribute, ask your own questions, and learn from others.

Because of the open source style of this lab, this class will change it's content on a regular basis. Students may take this lab as many times as they like.

This course is not an SBU, and will not grant usage of the tools in the machine shop.

You must have the Tormach, Milling Machine, and Metal Lathe SBU's in order to take this lab

TXL702: Digitizer MBX CNC Embroiderer Software

Increase your knowledge of the digitizing process and quickly start printing your own art in thread.

Join us for this computer-based lecture class where we'll cover the many aspects of this feature-rich, digitizing software package, Janome's Digitizer MBX. This software supports a variety of embroidery machines, including the Janome.

If you're new to digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork), this is a great place to start. We'll discuss aspects of digitizing to be aware of when printing with thread; teach you how to work with existing art as well as digitize your own objects, including shapes and text; introduce you to features you can use to control the sew-out of your designs and more.

This two-hour class is all about the software and is likely to save you weeks of exploring on your own.

Recommendation: For hands-on demos of actual embroidering, including how to hoop and the handling of stabilizer, take the CNC Embroiderer safety and basic use (SBU) class. There's a slight advantage to taking the SBU before this class, but it's not required.

WKS: CNC Workshop - AUTO1 3D Printer Build

Here's something new for the 2015 CNC Workshop. In addition to the CNC Mini Mill build course we are also offering a 3D printer build course. This is a turnkey, 2-day workshop package in which you will receive expert instruction and guidance as you construct your own 3D printer from a kit and learn to operate it.

    Build Course Dates:

    June 16th and 17th. 9AM to 5PM each day

    Build Course Details:

You will be building the AUTO1 3D printer. This is a delta-type printer based on the popular RepRap Kossel design. It combines all the advantages of the open source hardware and software world with the low cost and convenience of a well-prepared kit package with many incremental improvements. It is a fast, reliable, and precise printer. This design uses three steppers to rapidly and precisely position a very lightweight nozzle over the mirrored print bed. It uses a quick-release filament extruder that makes changing filament a fast and simple operation, and has a temperature controlled fan for the nozzle to prevent overheating. The kit comes with a complete assembly and calibration manual, with more support available on-line. The printer can be controlled with a laptop via a USB 2.0 connection or in a stand-alone mode using an SD card for file storage.

AUTO1 features over the RepRap Kossel:

    Larger build volume

    Stronger frame

    Filament out sensing

    Easier filament change

    Integral filament holder

    Wiring harness provided

    Integral fan

    Illuminated Nozzle

    Simplified leveling procedure

    Auto Calibration

To enroll in this build course there is a $75.00 registration fee. Signup below. Your registration includes admission to the CNC Workshop for an even better value!

IMPORTANT: When you have registered you will need to purchase the AUTO1 3D printer workshop kit directly from the manufacturer. You will receive the special workshop discounted price of $795.00 ($100.00 less than regular price!) and the kit will be waiting for you on-site at the workshop. All you need to bring is a laptop with a USB 2.0 port or higher.

Purchase your 3D printer kit by contacting www.autotroph.com/workshop.html or call (636)336-6150 and tell them you've signed up for the build class at the 2015 CNC Workshop.

WKS: CNC WorkShop - CNC Mini Mill Build

Here's you opportunity to build your very own fully functional CNC milling machine!

The machine build workshop is one of the best experiences available each year at the CNC Workshop. This is a 3-day intensive turnkey workshop in which you will receive expert guidance and instruction to convert a bench top milling machine into a fully functional CNC mill. You will not only build the machine but will be taught how to operate it, guaranteeing that you will complete the course with everything you need to begin making parts on your own!

Participants in this Build Workshop will also be eligible for discounted admission to the CNC Workshop which begins on the last day of the build workshop.

    Build Course Dates:

    June 15th, 16th and 17th. 9AM to 5PM each day.

    Course Details:

This year the CNC mill build is again based on the high-torque Mini Mill with solid column from Little Machine Shop but with significant upgrades to the mechanical and electronics components. This has proven to be a very capable machine and makes an excellent CNC mill. The build will provide you with an even better machine than in the past, with the addition of pre-loaded ball screws, PMDX control, Mach 4 machine control software, and slightly more powerful stepper motors.

This year our electronics package will include:

The PMDX-340 with the PMDX-411. This new motion controller will provide very smooth and fast control with the new Mach4 software. The control package will even allow for USB hookup to the machine, so you will be able to use your own laptop to run it!

Steve Stallings, the president of PMDX will be on hand at the workshop to help setup the control.

    Our mechanical package will include:

Pre-loaded (for decreased backlash) ball screws for all 3 axis from CNCfusion.com.

Our CNC control software will be the new Mach4 package from Newfangled Solutions. This new software is based on the years of experience with Mach3 and offers the refinement you would expect. We will have Brian Barker, President of Newfangled and the principle author of Mach4 on hand to help install and show you how to use your new software.

We have fully tested this package so you can be assured your machine will be ready to run, and you will have learned to use it, at the conclusion of the build.

    Extra Bonuses:

Little Machine Shop is again offering to add any mill tooling or supplies you might want with free shipping to the workshop. If you do not already have such items as a mill vise, collets, end mills, etc we suggest you call Little Machine Shop and arrange to purchase any supplies. Be sure to tell them you are taking the CNC mill-build course and they will send the items to the workshop with free shipping. You will be able to use the vise and tools to actually make a part at the workshop. We will supply g-code and instructions to help you make the first part on your machine at the conclusion of the workshop.

The cost of the build is $2,620.00, which gives the builder a savings based on the multiple-part discounts we are being given by our component suppliers. Your admission to the CNC Workshop is also included in the cost of the CNC Mini MIll Build, giving you an even better value!
