ART113: Silkscreen Printing Basics - SBU

In this hands-on class, learn the basics of silkscreen printing. TechShop makes it easy by using vinyl stencils rather than photo-emulsion. Prepare a vinyl stencil, transfer onto a screen, apply ink to fabric through screen, and then heat set the ink. It’s that simple.

Want to print a t-shirt using your own artwork? Bring a simple black and white drawing that will be cut by hand. Participants who have passed the Vinyl Cutter Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class may bring in a pre-cut design to use. Otherwise, choose from several designs provided. Get ready to start making custom silkscreened t-shirts!

Project: Custom t-shirt

Prerequisites: None!

Equipment access: Silkscreen station

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

T-shirt provided: black or white. Please bring your own if you would like a custom shirt color.

Recommended for sharp graphics on your shirt: CNC vinyl cutter SBU, but not required. This silkscreen class will teach a hand cutting vinyl method with an exacto knife. Choose from pre-approved images provided by the instructor.

If you have taken the vinyl cutting class, please cut your vinyl sheet ahead of time and bring to class. You will need the negative for screen printing, not the vinyl sticker cut-out, so please bring the whole vinyl sheet unpeeled.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

AUD009: Autodesk Inventor for Mold Design

Injection mold design and manufacturing can be one of the most expensive and time consuming processes in manufacturing and prototyping. But it doesn't have to be.

Autodesk Inventor has a number of incredible software tools that make designing complex parts much easier. The feature-rich mold design section covered in this class is one of them.

In this class, the instructor will cover several tools that are available to automate key aspects of injection mold design and testing.

Learn how parts modeled in Inventor can be used to automatically generate an efficient mold as well as how Inventor ensures that any changes to the digital model are automatically reflected in your mold design.

When you are done with your design, the file can be exported to a variety of different CAM (computer aided manufacturing) packages to generate the code needed to machine your mold on equipment such as TechShop's CNC Tormach mill. Once you've machined your mold, it can be used to manufacture parts on TechShop's Morgan Press injection molding machine.

This class is a fantastic way to do in-house rapid prototyping and can help you cut down on the number of iterations needed before you have a working final mold ready for production on any scale.

EEE103: Arduino Part 1 - Building An Arduino - Educato

The Arduino is a microcontroller; a small computer that has a single function. Microcontrollers run everyday items like toaster ovens, electronic toys and MP3 players. An Arduino can be programmed to monitor sensors and watch for inputs like temperature, pressure, light, voltage or a button or switch. It can also be programmed to control switches, relays, motors and other outputs. There are many add on boards, called shields, that add features like WiFi, GPS and card readers.

Electronic "smarts" can be added to projects to make them interactive. For example, a pet door could be modified to lock if it's dark outside and the temperature is below 45 degrees.

This class is the first step in using the Arduino: soldering the parts onto the circuit board. Come to class with some basic soldering experience and get help and guidance while assembling the board.

FAB106: Sand Blasting and Powder Coating SBU

Powder coating is a durable, simple to apply, easy to clean up, product. It is inexpensive, and more environmentally friendly than paint, as it has no VOCs and no solvents are used. The final product is more durable than paint, and powder is available in many colors and finish types.

The sand blaster can be used on metal, wood, glass, mirror, plastics and almost any material that is rigid. It will remove paint, rust and mill scale, as well as cleaning welds. (The parts must be baked at about 400 degrees for 15 minutes, so it will not work on magnetic items, or anything with grease in the part, like bearings.)

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a cabinet sandblaster to prepare a small metal part, clean and coat it with powder, and then bake it on in the powder coat oven. There is only time in class for sandblasting steel and aluminum parts.

Note: The sandblast cabinet and powder coating oven are large enough for motorcycle frames, bicycles and many other bulky items. Please visit your local TechShop and check the oven size if you have a specific project in mind.

Because of possible shock (high voltage, low amperage) with a powder coating gun, members with a pacemaker, or any voltage sensitive medical equipment are not allowed to take this course or use the equipment.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

 RAPID PROTOTYPING (PRO)

PRO201: 3D Printing: Type A Machines SBU

3D printing allows you to quickly and easily create a physical object from a computer model, literally printing thin layers of the part one at a time. This is an easy way to prototype parts for machining or injection molding, or just making one-off parts out of convenience.

In this class, you will learn how to import, prepare, and print three-dimensional parts using the Series 1 3D printer from Type A Machines. With the largest build-space available at TechShop, the Series 1 can print larger objects than are possible with other 3D printers.

The class will print a small part that TechShop has designed.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

This class will not be transferable to or from the MakerBot classes for reservations.

WOD304: Advanced Woodworking - Joinery

Wood joinery is the foundation of building furniture and wooden structures. Joints can be very simple and purely functional or they can be complex and elegant, requiring a master level of artistry and skill to produce.

In this class, learn joint-making techniques as well as highly valuable theory and background information as they apply to joint making. Learn when to use certain joints, which joints are the strongest, how grain direction influences joint strength, glue selection, pre-gluing techniques, proper clamping and much more. This class will provide the foundation needed to create virtually any wood structural project.

Class time will be split between discussing theory in the classroom and learning joinery techniques and creating joints in the woodshop.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of WOD101 - Woodshop and WOD201 - Planer, Jointer and Router Table Safety and Basic Use (SBU) classes.
