ART103: Silkscreen Printing Basics - SBU

In this hands-on class, learn the basics of silkscreen printing. TechShop makes it easy by using vinyl stencils rather than photo-emulsion. Prepare a vinyl stencil, transfer onto a screen, apply ink to fabric through screen, and then heat set the ink. It’s that simple.

Want to print a t-shirt using your own artwork? Bring a simple black and white drawing that will be cut by hand. Participants who have passed the Vinyl Cutter Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class may bring in a pre-cut design to use. Otherwise, choose from several designs provided. Get ready to start making custom silkscreened t-shirts!

Project: Custom t-shirt or tote bag

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Silkscreen station

Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the silkscreen station outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

***Or, you can personalize your work apron from the Industrial Textiles class.***

CNC310: CAD to CAM Software - InventorCAM

InventorCAM is the next level CAM program offered by TechShop, supporting multiple-axis machining, both 2.5D and 3D feature cut path generation, and high levels of control over the cutting paths generated. It has the powerful benefit of being directly embedded into Autodesk Inventor so users can easily switch back to creating or adjusting their part and the toolpaths automatically reflecting the changes.

InventorCAM's highly intuitive user interface allows toolpath generation to be as simple or as complex as users want it to be, with equal level of control over the geometry and makeup of cutting tools. It is the optimum tool for the intermediate to advanced TechShop CNC machinist.

In this class, students will follow the instructor step by step in creating toolpaths for half of a feature-rich part, then solidify their knowledge by creating the toolpaths for the other half with instructor guidance.

Prerequisites: This CAM works with Inventor to create GCode; you must be able to use Autodesk Inventor before signing up for this class.

In order to get the most out of this class, we recommend that students be familiar with TechShop's first-level CAM programs from Vectric: VCarve and Cut3D as well as have experience using the Tormach or the ShopBot. Introductory topics such as feeds and speeds, zeroing machines appropriately according to defined zeros in the CAM program, workholding, and loading exported toolpaths into the machines will not be reviewed.

FAB106: Sand Blasting and Powder Coating SBU

Powder coating is a durable, simple to apply, easy to clean up, product. It is inexpensive, and more environmentally friendly than paint, as it has no VOCs and no solvents are used. The final product is more durable than paint, and powder is available in many colors and finish types.

The sand blaster can be used on metal, wood, glass, mirror, plastics and almost any material that is rigid. It will remove paint, rust and mill scale, as well as cleaning welds. (The parts must be baked at about 400 degrees for 15 minutes, so it will not work on magnetic items, or anything with grease in the part, like bearings.)

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a cabinet sandblaster to prepare a small metal part, clean and coat it with powder, and then bake it on in the powder coat oven. There is only time in class for sandblasting steel and aluminum parts.

Note: The sandblast cabinet and powder coating oven are large enough for motorcycle frames, bicycles and many other bulky items. Please visit your local TechShop and check the oven size if you have a specific project in mind.

Because of possible shock (high voltage, low amperage) with a powder coating gun, members with a pacemaker, or any voltage sensitive medical equipment are not allowed to take this course or use the equipment.

***For the project, you may bring your bottle opener, sheet metal box or any other metal project that you made in a previous class to powder coat***

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

 RAPID PROTOTYPING (PRO)

PRO103: MakerBot Replicator 3D Printer SBU

Thanks to 3D printing, you can quickly and easily create a physical object from a computer model, literally printing the part as it goes. This is an easy way to prototype your parts before machining or injection molding.

In this class, you will learn how to import, prepare, and print your three-dimensional parts using the MakerBot Replicator 3D printer. By the end of session, you will have all the information and knowledge necessary to use this machine for all your 3D printing needs.

The class will print a small part, but due to the short length of class, not everybody will have a part to take home.

STEAM709: TechShop: CAMP MAKER

Camp Maker is a unique experience for young makers to discover the tools of the New Industrial Revolution!

The course focuses on core STEAM values while teaching key critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Design and Build Camp introduces young innovators to software and provides a chance to bring creations to life using TechShop equipment. Participants will spend time during the week using their CAD (computer aided design) skills in Autodesk and Adobe software before bringing projects to TechShop's Universal laser cutters and MakerBot 3D printers.

Day 1 will be an intro to TechShop and the Maker Movement, and campers will make their own camp shirts, embellished with their own designs!

Days and 2 and 3 will have the students learning about lasers and 3D printing and the software used to operate them, as well as introduce the design challenge for each machine.

Days 4 and 5 will give the students plenty of time to work with the equipment, with breaks for mini design challenges.

Participants who take and successfully pass this course will be certified to use the Universal laser cutters, MakerBot 3D printers, vinyl cutter, heat press, and silkscreen printing station at TechShop.

This one-week Summer Camp is for kids ages 12-17, Monday through Friday from 10AM - 4PM.
