WKSCH011: Introduction to Drones

This introductory and informative workshop starts out in the classroom and covers the history, evolution, and many applications of drones. See how drone technology is impacting society today. Learn the major components of a multi-rotor drone and how it operates, including the rules of safe flight and how to be a responsible user. Teams of students assemble a multi-rotor quadcopter which the instructor uses to perform a flight demonstration. Each student gets to try their hand at flying on a flight simulator. After class, everyone will have the option to purchase a Syma X1 Quadcopter to take home ($40).

WKSCH012: Advanced Vinyl Cutter - Using Multiple Colors

Learn to make vinyl stickers with the vinyl cutter using more than one color at a time. Use registration marks to make colors line up perfectly. Create amazing stickers or t-shirts after mastering this new technique. Bring an .eps file of a logo you would like to make for your project or choose to do the TechShop logo.

Project: Two-Color vinyl logo sticker on a ceramic tile

Prerequisites

  • Required: WKS537: Vinyl Cutter and Heat Press SBU

  • Recommended: COM201: Adobe Illustrator for CNC, COM207:CorelDraw for CNC


Minimum age: 12

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

When using the vinyl cutter outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

WKSCH013: Advanced Vinyl Cutter - Contour Cutting: Lifelike Wall Decals

In this informative, hands-on workshop, learn to use printable vinyl, the large format printer, the vinyl cutter, and FlexiSTARTER software to create lifelike wall decals. Contour cutting makes it easy to design almost anything you can think of: pets, kids, cartoon characters, and more.

Project: Wall decal of TechShop energy drink

Prerequisites

  • Required: WKS537: Vinyl Cutter and Heat Press SBU

WKSCH015: Laser Loom - Beginning Backstrap Weaving

Create a loom on the laser cutter and then learn to weave. This loom is yours to keep and take home so you can continue to create multiple colored woven fabrics!

Project: Rigid Heddle Backstrap Loom

Prerequisite(s): None; LAS101 Laser Cutting and Etching SBU recommended.

WKSCH016: Advanced Sewing - Decorative Pillow

Are you ready to take your sewing projects to the next level? Learn advanced skills while making a beautiful decorative pillow. At the end of class, you will be able to calculate yardage, pattern match fabric, make cording, and insert an invisible zipper. Materials are included or bring your own fabric (1 yard) and coordinating thread to create a pillow that will perfectly match your decor.

  • Required: TXL109: Basic Sewing Machines SBU

    Equipment access: none

    Minimum age: 12

WKSCH019: 3D Printing Terrains

Want to commemorate a hike, make a tribute to a favorite mountain, or give a unique gift? Try 3D printing terrains! In this workshop, learn how to import map elevation data and process it into a. STL-formatted file that may be printed on the TechShop’s MakerBot Replicator. At the end of class, you’ll be able to arrange a time to come into the shop and print your model.

Project: Create a file to print 3D terrain. Return to TechShop to print.

Prerequisite(s): None; PRO103: MakerBot Replicator 2 3D Printing SBU recommended.
