WKS804: Make a Leather Wallet

I love the smell of laser burnt leather in the morning! How many times have you said that? Not many ... but how many times have you hunted for the ideal wallet? Too many!

In this workshop, you will learn how to design patterns and artwork on the computer, then cut your patterns and carve your artwork into leather with a laser. You will also learn leather sewing techniques and apply them to assemble your highly personalized wallet!

Please note: Workshops utilize TechShop’s equipment; all shop rules apply – unless you have passed our required safety courses (SBU's) your instructor will assist you on the equipment. This is not an SBU workshop – you must pass the appropriate Safety and Basic Use class to use TechShop's equipment unattended.

WKS883: Electronic Hardware

Are you more comfortable with computer software than computer hardware? Have you ever wondered how a computer actually works at the hardware level? Do you want to design your own electronic project/prototype circuits? Do you want to know Boolean logic and understand Inverters, OR, AND, NOR, Exclusive OR and NAND gates? How about flip-flops, multiplexors, decoders, etc.? Would you like to understand how Transistors, Diodes, MOSFETs, LEDs, Capacitors, Resistors, Inductors and SCRs work and when to use them? Then the Basic Electronic Hardware Workshop is for you.

The three-hour Electronic Hardware Workshop - Level 1 will help you understand the basics of electronic circuit design. You’ll learn how the simple Ohm’s law can be used to guide you through most of your electronic designs. You’ll learn all about voltage, current and power and how they affect each other. You’ll learn how to read a datasheet for LEDs, MOSFETs and other components. You’ll learn how to read and draw schematics. This fun and very interactive workshop will include interactive discussions, hands-on demonstrations and electronic experiments.

After attending this workshop, you should be able to answer this question: If a switch is rated at 10 Amps and 250 Volts, how much current (Amps) will it handle at just 25 Volts? (You’d be surprised at how many EEs get this wrong!)

The Electronic Hardware Workshop – Level 1 is presented by Lou Lippincott. Lou has over 30 years of experience in electronic design and has his name on over 70 hardware design patents. Now an independent inventor, Lou has taught electronics at many levels. Lou has a knack for teaching complex concepts in clear and understandable terms for people at all levels of knowledge and experience. You do not need any prior electronic hardware experience to enjoy this workshop.

WKS851MP: Intellectual Property Protection

Do you have an idea, but are unsure if you should even discuss it with others, or wish you had the skills and knowledge to quickly decide how to protect your idea?Did you know there are several options available to protect your ideas, ranging from copyrights and trade secrets to patents? Did you know that you can get “patent pending” status for your idea for less than $150? And did you know that sometimes the best way to protect your idea is to make it public information?

The journey from the birth of an idea to successful product or business can be a long and arduous path. This workshop will help guide you through the process of quickly and inexpensively protecting your idea so that you can concentrate your efforts on developing and marketing your product.

This workshop will focus on the USPTO patent process, but it will also provide information on copyright, trademark and publishing options for protecting your ideas. Presenter Lou Lippincott will walk you through the entire process for one of his latest patent filings. After attending this interactive workshop, you will be able to write and file your own patent application for no more than the USPTO filing fees and postage!

Attendees are encouraged to bring a flash drive to the workshop and take home completed USPTO forms and sample documents.

About the Presenter: Lou Lippincott is an independent inventor who writes and files his own patents. (He has more than 40 US and foreign patents!) He has consulted with international companies and helped them set up or improve their own patent practice processes, including invention disclosure, patent harvesting and patent selection. Now you can take advantage of his expertise to help you with your own Intellectual Property Protection process.

Disclaimer: Lou Lippincott is neither a patent attorney nor a registered patent agent and cannot give legal advice.
