TXLCH001: Skill Builder: Lined Drawstring Bag

This class is the first in a series of pouch based sewing workshops. In this project based class, you will learn to sew a bag with a finished lining and drawstring. By the end of the class you'll have learned skills including how to:

Choose Needle and Thread for Fabric, Create a Lining, Sew Long Even Lines, Press Seams, Make a Drawstring Strap, Finish Ends of Strap, Piece Together Different Fabrics, Create a Boxed Bottom on a Bag.

Prerequisites:
  • Required: This is not an SBU and will not count towards machine access.

  • Recommended: TechShop Basic Sewing Machines SBU

Equipment access:

Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

Safety: Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.

TXLCH002: Skill Builder: Heavy Duty Tool Roll

This class is the second in a series of pouch based sewing workshops. In this class, you will learn how to sew a heavy weight, durable tool roll with pockets for hand tools, paintbrushes, or knitting needles, and straps to tie it closed. At the end of class, you’ll be able to:

• choose needle and thread for fabric

• sew heavy fabric like canvas and denim

• finish seam allowances to prevent fraying

• press seams

• mark stitching lines on fabric

• sew straps

• sew long, straight seams

• topstitch

• make an sturdy “x box” stitch

This is not an SBU and will not count towards machine access.

    TXL525: Read-a-Sewing-Pattern Workshop

    Ever wanted to make your own garment, but it seemed like you'd have to learn a new language? Come, take a vocabulary lesson with us -- and feel free to bring a pattern you have questions about.

    This class is an introduction for people who would like more information or are new to using patterns. It is easy to be overwhelmed and this class will help you locate the key information. It will also explain how to follow the directions to assemble a completed project.

    Please bring in a pattern you would like use as a reference or one that you have questions about.

    TXL101: Basic Sewing Machine SBU

    In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use a sewing machine. Acquire skills to correctly thread machine, fill and place the bobbin, and change the foot. Also learn to sew straight, zig-zag, basting, and other specialty stitches.

    This machine sews through regular weight fabric but not heavy duty materials like leather or thick canvas. Go on to create messenger bags, rocket parachutes, clothing, plushies, sails, costumes, and more!

    Project: Pocket bag

    Prerequisites: None

    Equipment access: Sewing machine

    Supervision requirements: During class, all students 8–12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

    When using the laser cutter outside of class time, members 8–12 years of age must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

    Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

    Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

    TXL103: CNC Embroiderer SBU

    In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to create custom embroidery designs with the intuitive and easy-to-use Janome embroidery machine. Take part in several demos and become familiar with hooping methods, needles, threading, several types of stabilizers, and more. See how to create digitized stitches based on monogramming and logo art as well as clipart-style designs. New to digitizing? Take TXL204: Digitizer CNC Embroiderer Software next!

    Project: Embroidered patch

    Prerequisites: None

    Equipment access: Embroidery machine

    Supervision requirements: During class, all students 8–12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

    TXL204: Digitizer Pro Embroiderer Software

    In this lecture-based class, learn the many aspects of this feature-rich, digitizing (creating machine embroidery stitches from 2D artwork) software package by Janome. (The software also supports Brother.) See how embroidery designs are created from existing artwork, objects (e.g., shapes, text, and clipart), and original artwork. This software-focused class does not include time on the CNC embroidery machine. Prepare to start having fun printing art in thread!

    Project: None

    Prerequisites: None. However, successful completion of TXL103 CNC Embroidery Machine prior to taking this class is recommended.

    Equipment access: Digitizer embroidery software

    Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

    TXL104: Serger Sewing Machine SBU

    In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the serger sewing machine to sew and hem fabric. Learn basic operations such as threading, adjusting stitch length and feed ration, and fixing broken thread. Get hands-on serger experience using overlock stitching to create high quality, soft-feeling seams and fine rolled hems.

    This machine sews regular weight fabric but not leather or thick canvas. Expect to increase productivity after learning this efficient machine.

    Project: Pocket bag

    Prerequisites: None

    Equipment access: Serger sewing machine

    Minimum age: 12

    Supervision requirements: During class, all 12- to 15-year-old students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also enrolled in the class.

    When using the serger sewing machine outside of class time, 12- to 15-year-old members must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian who has passed the SBU.

    Safety: Closed-toed shoes are required.

    Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!
