TechShop Partners with BMW Group and UnternehmerTUM – Center for Innovation and Business Creation at Technical University Munich
Driving international expansion, TechShop, BMW Group and UnternehmerTUM team up to open new facility by 2015
MENLO PARK, Calif. , October 29, 2013 -- TechShop, a membership-based, do-it-yourself (DIY) workshop and fabrication studio, announced it is partnering with BMW Group and UnternehmerTUM, the Centre for Innovation and Business Creation at Technical University Munich, to open the first TechShop facility in Europe. The new TechShop facility will expand UnternehmerTUM’s Entrepreneurship Centre at the research campus in Garching, located just outside of Munich. Responding to the increasing demand for DIY maker spaces in Europe, TechShop Munich and future locations will fuel the growing maker movement on the continent.

“We’re proud to be working with such respected names as BMW and UnternehmerTUM to bring TechShop to the people of Munich,” said Mark Hatch, CEO of TechShop. “Our goal is to satisfy people’s passion for engineering and making with the tools and resources they need, and we’re excited to expand that mission to Europe.”

The first TechShop in Europe will be a high-tech workshop infrastructure and will include a variety of machines, tools and software for prototype construction and small-series production. TechShop infrastructure and services will complement the existing entrepreneurship training, incubation and consulting activities of UnternehmerTUM within one building. On-site training and consulting services are a foundation of the TechShop model.

“BMW Group and UnternehmerTUM are partnering with TechShop to strengthen the local network of the city, universities, startups, companies and the local creative scene,” said Paul Duggan, managing director of TechShop International. “Our aim is to reinforce Munich’s position as an innovation center and high-tech city. BMW Group and UnternehmerTUM join existing TechShop partners that include Arizona State University, Autodesk, Intel Corp., General Electric and Ford.”

TechShop continues to grow and open new locations in the U.S. It is currently following an aggressive timeline to build new facilities, with an opening in Chandler, Ariz. in November 2013 and another in Washington, D.C. (Arlington, Va.) in 2014. TechShop is targeting additional cities, with investment opportunities in Los Angeles; Chicago; Cedar Valley, Iowa; Boston; Baltimore; Grand Rapids, Mich., St. Louis; New York; Portland, Ore.; Seattle and more.

TechShop’s positive impact on local communities is proven in the U.S. and it will bring that same model to future international locations to achieve similar results. At each of its six existing facilities, TechShop brings together and cultivates a highly creative, collaborative group of makers, tinkerers, students, academics and entrepreneurs who share ideas, create new products, businesses and jobs, and learn new skills.
