Jim Newton
Chairman & Founder

Jim is an uber-DIYer and lifelong maker. A serial entrepreneur, Jim holds several design patents and created TechShop because he needed a place to build his own inventions. Before founding TechShop, Jim was a BattleBots competitor and former full-time Science Advisor on the Discovery Channel's hit show MythBusters. Jim spends much of his time on-site at TechShop and thoroughly enjoys helping TechShop members with their projects. He also enjoys baking sourdough bread, camping with his family, and dreaming up new project ideas.




Mark Hatch
Chief Executive Officer & Co-founder

Mark is CEO and co-founder of TechShop and a recognized leader in the global maker movement. Under his leadership, TechShop revenue grew 20-fold in five years and multiple new locations have opened across the US. Mark has held executive positions at firms including Kinko’s, Avery Dennison, and Health Net. In 2013, his book The Maker Movement Manifesto was released by McGraw-Hill Education. He has been recognized by San Francisco Business Times as one of  the Bay Area’s Most Admired CEOs and by Popular Mechanics as one of 25 movers and makers who are reinventing the American Dream. Mark has spoken at events such as SXSW, Techonomy, TEDx, and The Clinton Global Initiative. A former Green Beret, Mark holds an MBA from the Drucker Center at the Claremont Graduate University.

Mike is an experienced financial executive with over 20 years of leadership and management consulting experience. While with Booz, Allen Hamilton, and M Squared, he helped Fortune 500 companies like Cisco, Chevron, Mobil Oil, Fox, First Nationwide and Bechtel. He has served as an executive at Levi Strauss & Company, managing all finance-related technology initiatives. He has also held management positions with small businesses and been an outside advisor to several startups. As a CFO with Early Growth, Mike supports companies throughout their early stages of development. Mike received an MBA in finance, marketing, strategy and entrepreneurship from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern and a BA in economics, mathematics and psychology from Claremont McKenna College.

Dan Woods
Chief Operating Officer & Vice President of Business Development

Dan drives TechShop's operations, product and service strategies, and is responsible for business development and sales programs. Before joining the team, he spent nine years at O'Reilly Media and was the co-founder of MAKE Magazine, which focuses on how-to projects for makers. In this role, Dan oversaw marketing, media relations, circulation development, community outreach, and sales for the magazine. He helped establish MAKE as the premier media group and voice of the DIY market. He also conceived and launched the Maker Shed store, growing it to one of MAKE's most important assets. Dan has a BS in Aeronautics from San Jose State University and studied business administration at Santa Clara University's Graduate School of Business.

Mike Catterlin is TechShop's vice president of marketing. Having joined the company in 2009, Mike has worked in multiple roles at TechShop, including Dream Consultant, general manager of two separate locations, director of new store development, and managing director of operations. While serving as Managing Director of Operations, Mike oversaw several strategic initiatives at TechShop, including the launch of TechShop's partnership with DARPA and the VA to provide skills training for veterans, the opening multiple new locations domestically and internationally, and the design and implementation of multiple new operational programs.
